I also agree with others that Nikon needs to reboot their entire p&s line- changing the branding from "coolpix" to something else less kitschy is a start. To me, this branding couldn't sound less like a serious prosumer model. It sounds like a name you would slap on a pink plastic key chain camera. The G11 and S90 are technically Powershot models but that branding does not appear anywhere on the camera body.

BdgBill

Comments on Nikon says it's developing a competitor to Canon's G11

I'd rather they compete with Sigma or Ricoh insofar as compacts go.

Blacknimbus

Comments on Nikon says it's developing a competitor to Canon's G11

Would this be the rumored Nikon EVIL camera (Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangable Lens)

rudiger

Comments on Nikon says it's developing a competitor to Canon's G11

For a company that got me to buy a D300 they cannot seem to produce a decent non-DSLR if their lives depended on it.

How many years has it been since they've produced anything that got rave reviews that didn't start with "D" ?

DizWhiz

Comments on Nikon says it's developing a competitor to Canon's G11

Live View with720p video *Dreams*

haz

Comments on Nikon says it's developing a competitor to Canon's G11

720p? I know there is someone out there for it, maybe the one-camera person with some hang up against a dslr? The S90 has obsoleted the very concept of the G series.

Here's why: anyone savvy enough to not be intimidated by the G already owns a DSLR. The only advantages you can get over an SLR are cost (cheap cameras), silence (micro 4/3 and Leicas), and portability. To merit buying a second camera, it should have 2 out of 3, without many other compromises, such as low-light, speed of handling, and image quality. So, the S90 is now the benchmark, not the G11.

This doesn't mean they won't also try to beat the S90, but if they don't, they shouldn't waste their time.

jay

Comments on Nikon says it's developing a competitor to Canon's G11

DSLR are much too large as they're basically carry-overs from film cameras.
