I'd say go with a netbook over the pad anyday. You will be familiar with the OS and be able to do a lot of basic tasks fairly well.  <br><br>IMHO touchscreen netbooks are totally unnecessary.  Being so small, the UI elements are almost microscopic and require the use of a stylus, not a bad thing in and of itself but an active digitizer is needed for a truly great handwriting/navigation experience. Will not negate warranty, as you can reinstall windows at anytime.<br><br>2. Who needs OSX support its an OS made for people who are not tech savvy.  For god sake my grandmother can use it with out any problems.<br><br>3. As someone who has had a Dell Mini 9 hackintosh it runs wonderful. If it weren't I'd recommend the iPad, but, as it is, the viliv s7 and s10 (not yet released) are probably better options for you. They have full operating systems on them and both have 3G. Though, you could always get a much cheaper netbook/tablet and just get an unlocked 3G USB dongle.<br>Also, keep in mind how frustrating it'll be not to have all the ports and the optical drive of your macbook whenever you need it. Lenovo doesn't quite make them like IBM used to, and has had some issues with shipping on time, but the X series (with or without the tablet) is fantastic for actually being portable while also good enough for professional use. I still have an X40 that I purchased in 2004 which is running Windows 7 after an upgrade to an SSD drive.<br><br>Yes it costs more, but the guy obviously doesn't have a problem paying extra given he has a Macbook. The MacBook mention was totally obvious bait for people to say iPad without thinking, but in this case the iPad really doesn't match his needs.<br><br>A good digitizer and/or a good keyboard is necessary for good note-taking and the iPad appears to have neither. The X201t has both (as well as a capacitive touch screen). Also, if he is going to do serious IT work, any option with only a mobile OS (like the iPad) isn't really going to cut it.<br><br>If he doesn't really care much about touchscreen, the X201t and the X100e are also good options. I'm not big on netbooks, but a little Atom w/ Ion or CULV 11.6" machine might do it for you.  On the other hand, for a bit more you can have very nice build quality and a proper ULV dual core CPU with a 1.2Ghz HP 2530p.
