First iPad ad premieres during the Oscars
Apple's doing the Oscars up right tonight -- not only was Steve Jobs making friends on the red carpet, but the company ran the first iPad ad just now during the broadcast. It's pretty much what you'd expect out of an Apple ad, but, you know, more magical. Get ready for a blitz of these as we lead up to April 3. Video after the break.

Yeah I saw it too!!!! Oh My God, OMG, OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crazy Fan Scream!!!!
Faints!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@SetThemStraight I love how they showed the same 5 or 6 apps over and over again.
@AlexSanchez that was sarcasm with a hint of fail BTW
Cutting away as the person starts to type, brilliant move Apple! Wouldn't want people to see how horrendous the experience will be.
@nicholiservia
Haha, I was just poking fun at the whole issue. So much Irony. This thing is suppose to be magical, and yet we all know it cannot watch any of these trailers :)
@AlexSanchez
Did you see how quickly they switched over when the person was attempting to type? I wanted to see how good it will be to type on that thing LOL
Well, this is the first of many, MANY iPad commercials to come...
@SetThemStraight
The Oscars.... Yawn. The iPad ad was the highlight of the Oscars. I'm ready for some "magic."
@SetThemStraight Lol yeah I did notice that, typing on that thing looks like it's going to be horribly gay..I mean why else would they of made a seperate keyboard?
Apple needs to admit it, they didn't make a tablet, they made a netbook version of their desktop, the netMac
@AlexSanchez did anyone else notice how they only showed a split second of using the keyboard? probably because it looks so awkward and doesn't work well
@SetThemStraight
I'm a noted Apple user hater, but as a graphic designer I'm normally impressed by their iPos and iPhone ads. This ad pretty much says "meh."
@SetThemStraight
*hurls sledgehammer through giant screen*
@MM OBVIOUS Chill out dude, they're doing their job. If I ran a tech blog, I would of posted it too.
Do you have any idea how many people might have searched iPad after that commercial?
If you google iPad, Engadget is the fourth listing, not including the "News" and "latest talk" listings.
Smarten up playa, that's why they're successful.
@AlexSanchez Dude. I was fine until they decided to delete my first post which was getting approval. The site is obviously biased, but refuses to hear it, and it uses all sort of stupid rhetoric to lead stupid people around by the nose.
@MM OBVIOUS We just don't like reading whiny assclown remarks.
Sue us.
@AlexSanchez
Do you have any challenge?
@MM OBVIOUS I got a bag of skittles
@AlexSanchez
Dare you strike the son of Odin?
@MM OBVIOUS I don't even care what you're talking about anymore.
@SetThemStraight
ha they showed Star Trek, that movie is in cinematic wide so it wont take up the whole screen, in fact it would probably look pretty silly with all the letter boxes you would get
@SetThemStraight Wow I just burned another minute of non stop showing of 6 apps redundantly on a fast-forward manner. That truly is a genuine Apple style!
I would surely definitely and one hundred certain of not getting this device until the second model arrives (if ever there will be) Reactions: http://bit.ly/ipad-should-or-shouldnt-get-it
@bigdonny I'm pretty sure that watching some one type does not fit well in an energetic, fast packed commercial. It's not going to be as good and a real keyboard, but it will be fine for entering URLs, and replying to email, etc. I would not want to write a novel on it though...
@Evan
i know, JUST before he touches the screen, MOVING ON TO STAR TREK NOTHING TO SEE.
@sweet greggo
1310...KTCK... Greatness
@sweet greggo same feeling I had...their commercials are usually very impressive, and to be honest I was prepared to be wowed and have my preconceived notions of the iPad reversed...instead they were confirmed.
Lamee sauce. The ad showed nothing really enticing at all.
@MM OBVIOUS Thats why they offer an apple free engadget you should sign on and let the people get the news if they want it
@Evan
never mind that the thing floats in mid air tilted upwards when he lets go of it.
The new levitating iPad, magical enough for ya?
@AlexSanchez: The World According to Alex: "Ha, a phone without a physical keyboard. What a failure that's going to be."
@AlexSanchez
You think it's only gonna have 5 or 6 apps? It's an ad. How many would you expect? Everyone knows the whole iPhone app store is there to use....
@MM OBVIOUS
Definitely downranked due to bias, but I am going to re-check that Courier article to make sure. If that first comment about jizzing and whatnot did not get downranked, then you are probably a victim of bias.
@onlymyrailgun
Just checked and in fact the "jizzed" comment is still highest ranked. Oh well, I'd rather see people vent their frustration this way than flying vehicles into buildings/1 Infinite Loop.
@SetThemStraight Wait didn't they only show a split second of everything? Watch it again, there is a cut every second or so.
@Atkins
Sorry you were so confused by my statement. Even though engadget is based in the U.S., I forget sometimes it is read by people who do not use English as their first language and people who are stupid. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume you are from Canada.
@trainwrecka
ya wall!
@bigdonny If Apple didn’t want people seeing how the iPad’s keyboard really works, it was probably a bad idea for Steve to actually type on it during the keynote.
This isn’t a guided tour or a demo. This is a thirty-second TV spot to get consumers thinking about the product.
@MM OBVIOUS hehhehe... oh the irony.
@jaffreywali
Yes but the applications are hard-coded for the iPhone resolution, all 150.000 are useless on this huge device.Android has a much smarter approach...
@SetThemStraight
when i get the iPad it makes me iSad....
@sliderem
Since your mentioned the Android MUST have more brilliant solution , you got to see this in the same site.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/entelligence-will-android-fragmentation-destroy-the-platform/
You got to see this ironic truth.
"? I recently tried to install one of the few good Android games and found it won't work on Nexus One as it has a nonstandard screen resolution. "
Since all OSX mobile device only have two kind of resolution now, and
iPad OS can simply use double pixel approach to run all iPhone apps.
Will any use have problem on resolutions about apps ? Not at all.
@zetman
Ugh.. WHY must it always come to this? EVERY Apple of Android related article turns into an immature hate-fest for both sides.
@zetman
iPad allows lower res apps to function 'iPhone size' or pixel scaled full screen. Far from optimal, but until the developer adds high res support to their app, it's functional in that the Application in question actually works and is usable.
@Evan
I remember hearing of a technique where you show flashy things very quickly. Quick enough that you can't quite tell there are problems with them. Like someones graphics demo-reel. When they throw all these little snippets at you you don't get to see anything significant.
@Ariel Bender It's a shame that all of these trolls aren't looking at the iPad for what it really is, which is a piece of hardware.
How boring was the Xbox before the updated UI and the new blades?
Remember when the PS3 couldn't upscale DVD's?
You know what is really "magical" with this device as well as most of the newer devices that exist?
F-I-R-M-W-A-R-E
How about all of the touchscreen phones we have today?
Oh yeah....that was all started by this device,...you may have heard of it....the iPhone.
I myself hated every thread of Apple's being....i was truly a Microsoft fan, hardcore.....mainly because I thought all of Apples stuff was overpriced....
But then I looked at what it really was....awesome hardware.
They have a higher standard to what they put their name on.
Do you know how many cheap pieces of crap will come out with Android on it?
Its going to be a touchscreen RAZR in a few years....
Market will be saturated with all of it.
Now if we look back at Apple....
Ok, so the iPad doesn't have a camera/webcam on it?
Who cares? I surely don't want to prop this sucker up and try to get a quick family portrait from it. I would much rather prop up an iPhone or equivalent device.
Ok, so no Flash? You know what? I think once Android devices and Dell Mini 5's start crawling into the market...Apple and Adobe will go out to some desolate area of the playground and make nice.
Guess what happens then?
One simple firmware update will upgrade every mobile apple device, clear back to the original 2007 iPhone, and everyone will have their flash.....or HTML 5.....whatever happens first.
Someone will conform, and Apple hardware will accommodate it.
Look at what the iPad really is....its an idea, based around a clipboard size touchscreen device.
There are already companies that will inject iPads into a hospital setting for real-time patient info, which they don't have to go back to a computer to type into.
Oh and you say it will be hard to type on? You wouldn't want to type a novel on the thing? Guess what, it was hard to type on the iPhone, and then everyone got adjusted to it.
So everyone that just likes seeing your voice typed out on a blog...
Shut up, and watch the future happen before your eyes.....
(Sorry for riding your reply, Ariel Bender!)
@BMills Thank you! Now I dont have to say all that myself. Its amazing how much joy people get from smashing on Apple products.
@bigdonny
yeah, and they lingered SOOOO long on all the other operations. :)
@BMills
If I could treat this thing "just as hardware", I would certainly be less hard on it. I can do that with my minis and my AppleTV.
I can even do that with my older ipods.
I can't do that with my iphone or this thing.
With the iPad: I'm stuck with the whole package as Big Brother Steve ordained it.
@BMills
There are so many fucking stupid flaws in what you've said. Please stop watching the commercials...
@BMills ::claps:: and hands the Oscar to BMills for being Intelligant. Nice, a couple days ago I said some had the best comment but, this is the best by far.
@SetThemStraight
no matter how shit the product is, you've gotta admit Apple does a damn good job at their ads. They make them look fun. A pitty the most fun n that device will be playing with lego instead of watching videos.
