Like clockwork, we've just been dropped a line by T-Mobile USA asking us to join them for a very special media event to check out the
HTC HD2 -- "a larger than life entertainment powerhouse" -- in fabulous New York City on the evening of March 16. That lines up nicely with the company's
earlier assurances that we'd see a launch in March -- but what day in March, exactly? Well, we're hearing from a number of tipsters (including trusted sources) that the 24th is the day this thing breaks loose at retail, so set your watches and calendars accordingly -- assuming you haven't been wooed into
Windows Phone 7 Series' tender, loving grasp, that is.
Update: MobiTV -- which has an app bundled with T-Mobile's version of the HD2 --
says the HD2 is launching on the 23rd, and frankly, they're probably in a position to know. Thanks, Stephen!
At least this thing won't get raped into a walled garden like the Motorola Backfail.
If only this had Android 2.1, I would be buying one day 1.
Would have been the best phone ever :(
@N900
I like the name Backflop, personally.
SOLD!
@N900 So how do you get your Google Maps and Opera Mini? Need apps that can operate on EDGE so that 3G will be icing.
Firefox links to GoogleMaps goes over EDGE budget, and installing Microemulator seems to be another budget violation also.
@N900 Come experience obsolescence of the future...
@treats There are Android ports being worked on for pretty much all the HTC Windows Mobile phones. Kinda neat to be able to dual-boot OSes on your phone, although to be honest it's somewhat pointless, as Opera 10 Mobile actually does a pretty awesome job for the web and Sense UI makes up for a lot of the craptacularity of Windows Mobile.
@treats You are kidding right? I assume you are mocking the morons who choke the chicken while posting how they wish a WinMo device had Android.
If that's your intent, ha ha. If you are serious, can you please buff the bishop somewhere else besides Engadget.
@treats
Actually, when it has WinMo7 it will be the best phone evah.
@sweet greggo
it is already the best phone ever. with WP7 it will just assure its position for a couple more months or years. who knows. What I know for a fact is that I am sooo getting this baby day one. The first device and only device that will make me sleep on the streets to be the first to get it.
Would have been better if it was 3.14.159
@N900
Motoblur: it's like windows XP vomited on Linux.
@sweet greggo
But it won't.
@steel
Yes it will. How many times does someone have to reference XDA before people get it?
but..but...but.. where is WP7????
@commenter7
Regardless, If your buying a phone today, the HD2 is undoubtedly the best on the market.
@Jimbob
Um no, Winmo 6.anything pretty much negates your statement. To have a large, fast rock is to still have a rock. One that apparently isn't going anywhere which is BS, they ought to just reprogram one of the buttons and put Win 7 on there. This reeks of Sony type idiocy.
@TWiz
I get so sick of these without WP7 it's worthless posts, WP7 simply dumbs down WM6.5 to iPhone levels except without the rabid steve jobs fanboys that buy whatever he tells them they want.
technically speaking WP7 doesn't over anything new over WM6.5 with senseflow.
touch friendly capacitive interface, WM6.5 w/senseflow has
facebook integration, WM6.5 w/senseflow has
twitter integration, WM6.5 w/senseflow has
nice looking interface, very subjective, IMO WP7 is ugly and poorly layed out, senseflow is 10x better.
flash? i've had flash on my HTC fuze with WM6.1 for over a year thanks to Skyfire
WP7 however takes away plenty, older apps, bye bye, manufacturers able to make nice UI's like senseflow, axed, open platform you can install whatever you want on it, I don't think so, widely varied form factors to suit different individuals needs, out of luck, real multitasking on it's superior "min spec" hardware, haha!!
Ok, so WP7 does bring one thing to the table WM6.5 doesn't have, Xbox integration, whhhheeeee!!!...... oh wait, i'm a PC gamer cause the PC is the superior gaming platform.
The all new dumbed down iPhone 7, brought you you by Microsoft.
@Jimbob
LOL you should be a comedian.
@commenter7
Hold your breathe until "Holiday 2010" and then become a beta tester
@Jimbob
The N900 Says hi.
@sandra You seem to miss the point of next-gen mobile OSes.
These days, with the proliferation of highly capable phones, it's not so much IF the phone can do something, it's HOW it does it. WP7S addresses that HOW.
@Jimbob Hi =]
@commenter7: You must have failed to read the fine print. "A Larger Than Life Entertainment Powerhouse." Not quite "A Magical and Revolutionary Product at a Unbelievable Price." Meh.
@sandra You are a nut. Why don't you just buy a Razr or a Nokia N110? I think I have an ancient DOS laptop you can have too. It's supposed to be simple, you want complicated, you make a phone.
@sandra
This person is ridiculous... LOL, what a fake! WP7 is DAY AND NIGHT a FAR BETTER EXPERIENCE THEN WM 6.5 COULD EVER BE!! It's not even worth typing a response, but I had to due to how misinformed people are. APPLE is scared to death of WP7, and WP& hardware is FAR SUPERIOR to any phone yet.
@TheRequiem
Apple could not and should not be scared of Microsoft vaporware. Listen, zune was supposed to be great. It was a big flop. Even win mo 6.5 was supposed to be great. It was a huge flop. Msft claimed IE in win mo 6.5 was better than safari on iPhone. It was not! Project pink was supposed to be great. It is stupid.
Apple's stock price is increasing. Microsoft is stuck at the same level. The smart money is not on vaporware. V-A-P-O-R-W-A-R-E.
@Jimbob - Yea, but how do you buy a Ferrari to drive on a dirt road. I want this phone sooo bad but T-Mo's 3G is sooo small. Sayin...
um...how many of you have actually USED WPS7?
HD2 with Window Phone 7 Series or no deal!
...Oh Wait, I am waiting for the Dell mini 5 with android 2.1. Sorry.
@One Love
oddly enough, I have a feeling neither will happen without the help from XDA :D
@One Love It has too many buttons to be qualified for Windows Phone 7 series phones. Windows Phone 7 series phones need three buttons.
@TheGr8t1
Too many?!!! OMG you have to be kidding me. I thought it was missing a specific dedicated button that Win 7 required. I knew they had strict hardware requirements but too many buttons. I call bs, they aren't going to upgrade it because they know that it would take sales away from Pure and Turtle
@One Love
I have had this amazing device since last september and I guarantee you that it does nit miss W7series or anything else to be just about perfect, (just a few extra files from XDA devs).
HTC has hidden win mob 6.5 so deep into its bowels that you'll never need to see it and SenseUI it's a joy to use.
I'm also waiting for the Dell Mini 5 and/or the HTC Desire or possibly the SE X10, to substitute my Hero (I need a separate phone for business use), but I'm gonna keep my HD2 until w7series has demonstrated to me that it can better the actual incarnation of what I have no qualms in defining the best smartphone I ever came across bar none.
Great camera/videocam, super WIFI reception(skype), easy tethering and mutating into a wireless modem/router, top notch voice dialing (once you downloaded the file from XDA devs), lots of free apps (even though not nearly as many nor as good as Android market) unbelivable screen (capacitive with multitouch) and multimedia functions (streaming and otherways), great music player, fantastic sat nav with copilot8 or tomtom, and lots of things I now forget.
Those who complain about it because it is based on win mobile(which is invisible and basically undetectable) have never , ever tried to use it.
(Ex N97, iPhone3GS, OmniaHD, HTC HD(1), owner)
@One Love
Its great that there are ignorant people like yourself. No deal for you will mean no wait on release day for me.
@One Love I can't wait to see what winmo 7 will bring to the table... hopefully android, web os, and the iphone line have forced MS to bring something nice to the table... another great option for smart phone users. Reactions: http://bit.ly/htc-hd2-reactions-review
@One Love
nice, i hope it does too.. its my birthday on the 23rd :j
@n2neee it's also 20 million other people's birthday on the 23rd. imagine if everyone who turned a year older got an HD2 on their birthday. Fastest selling smartphone ever. plus, babies popping out with 4.3" screens glued to their face, while their mothers surf the web to pick baby names.
that'd be an awesome HTC commercial actually. doctor, mother, nurse, husband all on their iPhones surfing when the baby pops out holding a massive HD2. And then the mother all teary-eyed looks at the baby and says "*she's beautiful...*" and then takes the HD2 out of the baby's hands and cries some more while using the phone. take note HTC! make the commercial! and give me credit!
Windows 7 is so far away. I'm on iPhone gen 1 still because I keep waiting for the next great(er) thing. Does the cycle ever end?
@(Unverified)
I'm also still rocking a first gen iPhone and have really been getting an itch to upgrade. I kind of want the rumored HTC SuperSonic (this phone with Android) but then again I want to see what Palm and Apple comes out with. Then by the time they all are released, I will want to wait for the next new super phone... lol
I do love the 4.3in screen and form factor on this phone though.
Bout time they started pushing this device; for a phone supposedly releasing on 3/24 I haven't seen a SINGLE advertisement for it anywhere.
@RaQ Holiday
I hear you, this brings me back to the days when I used HTC windows mobile phones before the IPhone and they just drag their a$$ on releasing phones, I thought after the IPhone they changed their ways but here they go again.
@RaQ Holiday
Its the same over here, there were (hardly) any adverts for the phone.
But I shall say like I always have, this phone isnt for the Masses.
@4x4vn
Actually, I suspect it's T-Mo that's causing the hold up here. Probably getting a ton of them shipped over and sent out to T-Mo stores nationwide does take a fair amount of logistical work.
You know...I might just get this phone. Theres nothing i don't like...
@JamRoc18 don't let the "baww no 7 Series" deter you. If you like what the phone offers you, make it yours =).
@JamRoc18 the xperia x10 does come close
@JamRoc18
I'm rocking the ROM build from this phone on my HTC Pure. It runs and looks awesome. The HD2 would just make it that much better.
Don't worry about WM7. That's still a ways away.
@kjb434
I'm getting one and waiting for next year for WM7 phone HD3!
