Everyone must cut compatibility at some point. The thing that causes fragmentation is when you start cutting compatibility in a time period shorter than the average device life cycle. The original generations of iPhones have gotten plenty of updates. In my opinion, Apple only really needs to support the 3G and 3GS at this point. Theses devices were both sold within the last 2 years and so it's reasonable to expect a decent number of people are using them. Supporting the 2G just cripples what you can do with your platform.

Delta

Comments on iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 drops in

@Dr Blight
I still use an Edge iphone, and I know plenty that still do. I don't think 3 years is outdated for anything, marketting departments just want you to think that.
I don't see what could possibly be in this update that would date the iphone edge, though I would upgrade if Apple brought out a significantly better iPhone. But I'm pretty sure the iPhone Edge can handle the 3D bookshelf turning to reveal the iBookstore ... assuming Apple wants to include that. I've never purchased anything on iTunes, especially not through my iPhone ... but I would devour books on my iPhone through the iBookstore. I'm sure the realize the increased revenue is better than trying to make people buy an iPad if they want to read a book. I might buy an iPad, maybe a second generation one, anyway (not that I would buy one just for the bookstore, though. I like real books, but I'd buy a few iBooks to keep on my phone for convenience).

James Sonne

Comments on iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 drops in

@Dr Blight
I was thinking that too. I think it will fall to the devs though as there's nothing stopping them from making current apps that will only run effectively on the newer 3GS hardware due to the increased graphics horsepower. This isn't a 'portable device' like a phone, it isn't trying to be... I think my laptop is going to get a lot less use.

The thing is, this irrational iPad hatred seems to have infected much of the tech community. It has become 'fashionable' to rant about how pointless it is... but once people get a hold of it, I think opinions will change rapidly.

The reality is the vast majority of people hate the way computers currently work, they have no idea how to accomplish even the simplest of tasks on a PC or Mac. The iPad will change all that, it is a computer that you mum/dad/gran could use... seriously, it is going to change everything.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but we won't know either way for a year or so... I just wish people would give it chance and quit all this mindless Apple bashing.
