Jen-Hsun Huang is 'looking forward' to court date with Intel, sees no reason to settle (video)
Sometimes companies spar out their differences behind closed doors, and sometimes they have guys like Jen-Hsun Huang at their helms and the whole world gets to know how they feel and what they intend to do about it. The Tegrasaurus Rex has taken a recent interview with Fortune magazine as an opportunity to eloquently lay out his side's case in the epic cross-licensing dispute between NVIDIA and Intel, and to let us all know that he sees "no reason" to settle with the Atom-making giant. Describing Intel's argumentation as "completely nonsense," NVIDIA's fearless leader tell us that he's eagerly anticipating the court clash scheduled for later this year. We can't yet confirm whether or not he finished it off with a "bring your popcorn" instruction, but all his recorded words await in video form just after the break.

Ha he's like it's going down out there
Thats his "Jizz in my pants" look
@Alexpeegs
That's his "Rawr, I'm Godzilla" look, right before he does.
Crazy, but ballsy. I am ok with him.
What does "After the break" mean anyway?? Is there a commercial?
@Nitesh
And he speaks perfect American!
@Kurian "...he speaks perfect American"
It's good to see that you approve his verbal coherency,,,,can't say too much about yours though.
@pitnefor
It's a joke... referring to news anchors talking about stories "after the [commercial] break".
Can't believe that had to be explained. Watch some local news.
@tovopro
Haha. I agree. But you have to understand that @Kurien's from the Deep South where their knowledge of geography barely extends beyond the South with America being the PhD-level stuff.
"Jen-Hsun Huang says his company has the bank account to go the distance in its legal dispute with Intel"
Not to downplay how successfully nVidia has been the past years, and they do pull in quite a profit. But he does realize that in just ONE quarter Intel pulled in over 2 Billion dollars in pure profit. And that's WITH the 1 Billion dollar fine they had to pay to AMD.
It's one thing to stand up to your company, but don't go around trying to say how you can toe-to-toe financially with one of the richest tech companies in the world. That's just stupid.
@Prevacator I don't think going to court is going to come near the amount of money they have and make....
@Prevacator
This is a worthwhile venture for nvidia, because if they win this one, they could once again create products that still rake in some few million dollars. Intel currently has quite a monopoly with their chipsets, nvidia just wants some portion of the pie.
@Prevacator He's talking about a LEGAL battle. Nvidia has more than enough money for that. If it was a technological or business battle, that might be a different story....
@Prevacator
The lawyers aren't exactly billing Nvidia at 1 million dollars an hour you know so that argument is moot. He just means that they have the resources to pay for a long drawn out legal battle with Intel.
Picture WIN!
I'm not any anti/fan of Nvidia or Intel but this guy has some good points. I hope they win.
I think he oversimplifies the disagreements and I take exception with his assertion that they build the best GPUs, given the recent history of flaming GPUs. But it's his right to air things from his perspective.
I doubt the judge will allow it to go to verdict, but will instead force both sides to come to an agreement without changing money, and it'll frustrate the hell out of Huang, but he's a well-spoken fella who'll be able to get enough out of it to spin any resolution as favorable for Nvidia.
Of course, I think it's kinda funny that he responds (in an earlier video) that the profit margins Intel commands shows that they have a monopolistic position. Microsoft (27.70%) has more than double that of Intel's (12.44%) profit margin.
@gerrrg
Their might go to a verdict and imagine if Nvidia loses bcoz I'm pretty sure Intel knows what's happening. I'm afraid Nvidia might have just screwed themselves for being too cocky here! But it would be nice to settle for something other than risking losing the battle. The reason AMD took the money. They (AMD) could have pursued it further but they must have done something wrong too that would have nullified the suit had it gone far. Take money and run and make sure that you renew that agreement or otherwise Intel will bitchslap you will larabee (I fear that they have it closed just to see how ATI/Nvidia play their cards and then they strike lol.jokes)
@gerrrg
Hes the owner of Nvidia of course they make the best if he says anything less it would be stupid from a business stand point and hes the owner of course its his opinion would you expect anything less??
@gerrrg
#1 Intel's profit margin was over 50% at some point before the crisis.
#2 Intel is a hardware company, Microsoft is a software company.
One produces goods, it's called industry, the other is mainly a service company.
There is no example of an other major industry that has such profit margin (except maybe for Apple but can we call building an amazing OS and then selling way overpriced hardware bundle with OS X an industry ?)
@hero785
Just ask you about the ATI graphics? and what different between ATI and Nvidia?
DId you know ATI is only for Games and no high graphics programs.So most of the user (Before know about ATI and Nvidia graphics function ) will say ATI and Nvidia is same but is not.
I will choice Nvidia in my Computer and not ATI graphics is because Nvidia is powerful then ATI graphics.
He looks like a spaced-out baby chimpanzee. I love him already
Hey I know this guy!
What ticks me off about this whole fight is that Intel thinks they can make GPUs. Honestly Intel, stick to CPUs, your graphics processors are garbage.
@telepheedian
Intel chipsets have significantly lower failure rates than nvidia chipsets... ion only runs on nvidia chipsets...
Them's fighting words... I like it.
Nvidia is not different from Intel when it comes to competition so why is all different now? The main reason is because they are eating the same medicine.
I am pleased to see them struggling so some day they realize that there is a bigger guy that they must respect.
You get a better price buying a CPU+GPU from Intel vs CPU (alone) +Nvidia GPU. Intel tactics to screw Nvidia.
Nvidia does exactly the same tactics in the channel with bundles of GPU+Memory or GPU+ Chipset, so no different.
I hope Jen-Hsun someday reads and understand the meaning of Intel slogan "Intel Inside", this is Intel goal, to have a complete solution (PC) all Intel vs Intel + Nvidia or ATI
They are big company, We are big company & of-course I have big mouth as compared to paul so i'll keep talking non-sense.Why does this CEO has to talk like he never learned basics on communication deemed fit to a CEO.
i haven't seen any CEO who does that..not even "small" companies
He talks slower than usual , obviously trying to choose words :D so Mac Book Air you say , this guy really loves Apple!
I like intel.....and i like nvidia....but i'd watch this just because he's involved lol
Just give me my i5 MacBook Pro, please.
At the end of the day, we as the consumers don't want Intel to monopolize the notebook GPU market because their graphics chipsets are absolutely horrible. I've noticed over the past few years that major notebook manufacturers aren't giving you as much choice in your graphics chip like they used to and I'm starting to think its because Intel has muscled their way into this. You used to be able to choose a decent graphics chip from almost every single Dell laptop... now you only really get a decent one from their XPS line.
"bring your popcorn"? I'm guessing this is a Terrell Owens reference. Thanks Engadget, but lets leave those to the Deadspin crowd.
LOL at 2:12 in video. Blinking LED lights on the motherboard. Behold the huge rendering powers of nVidia processors give your computer more bling! Literally!.
I would love the choice of having Nvidia on my laptop. Why should they be not allow on them?
@RandallLind
Dude I don't think he is saying it right and if he says it the same way in the court then I'm sure they lose. Some companies make laptops with Nvidia/ ATI GPU but the cost is not the same as putting an Intel chip. Higher end lappy get Nvidia/ATI and mid to lower usually have Intel, cost effective mate. And I'm pretty sure that this is not like "the Intel pays manufactures to avoid inclusion of Nvidia or ATI chips". If we complain how expensive Nvidia cards are for our desktop then think how big in terms of price difference it would be between having to manufacture a lappy Nvidia/ATI chip and a lappy with Intel chip.
Newby here!! lol!!
Been reading this site and ur comments for a while now..some of u r good at thinking and saying things and some of u r just trolls lol!!
Anyways I thought I'd finally make my own account and contribute!!
This guy sounds like he is determined but I don't think he's going to get as much as he's hopping for. One thing about laptops; it's the manufactures choice to put what they want in it in terms of graphics and you can certainly see that they all range from Intel graphics to Invidia depending on what class the laptop falls into. I'm sure no one wants a GTX 295, how long will it take before that laptop melts. Then again if you go and look for gaming laptop (not mainstream laptop for everyday use like school work and business and browsing and watching movies) but gaming laptop then it's clear that it either has an ATI chip or Nvidia so I don't think he's gonna win that battle.Intel takes that easily.Also don't forget the costs of making a lappy with gaming GPU, it's more than making a lappy with an ok GPU. I recently walked into futureshop and they are discontinueing one of Sony's best lappy that has Nvidia 330M simply bcoz Sony is losing money for pricing it very low. It's 1200 for Sony and 1700 for an HP with similar specs. See what I mean, so manufacture decides on what to put, can't blame Intel on this.
Don't forget the AMD / ATI (CPU/GPU Combo) beside the Intel's own CPU/GPU.
Ok? and I've noticed much of you focused on this as well, but if NVidia 'prevails', who cares how much money they will make?! What I care about, as do all of us should as well, is what will us (the consumers) get out of it? Are we going to see a new innovative or next gen. product line that is actually worth investing in? Or are we going to keep seeing all these corporate companies keep bickering, whining, and fighting each other while us consumers are the ones that get 'ganked' in the end?!
Whatever happen to the days of, where companies compete and consumers win?
@tovopro
I get your point but the bickering won't stop and innovation si going at a slow pace and things will change only whe these companies top suing each other. Some might have the right to do so but they forget that we want the next big thing. Perhaps it's our fault too for not demanding for better things eh! I think Nvdia sees that they can't compete with Intel so they have to take them to court. Just like crApple (mind you I have an iPhone and looking for Nexus One soon) sued HTC with laughable patents. So it's a trend mate, when some of these companies see that their competitors are winning majority of consumers (by having best products) they think "SUE those SOBs". So it's up to us in a way that we stop buying shit from shit makers and buy what we deem to be better.
@telepheedian
Intel is going down. And i can not wait for the day when Nvidia goes to court with intel. Nvidia will come out on top and the whole world will be able to have GPU's in all of our computers.
To any NOOBs, this is a big deal because we as consumers are getting shafted, why because intel is a greedy son of a bitch. and would rather inhibit computer evolution than potentially have a Nvidia become more successful.
the Gpu is the most important part of a modern computer and Intel is pissed off.
Jen-Hsun Huang is one of my heroes, seriously. The guy might run a company, but he has the balls to say things as he sees them -- which isn't always as I see them but I respect his openness greatly. I wish more companies had people like this at their helms
I gotta say that it's pretty refreshing to see the CEO of a company involved in litigation to just say things plainly without holding back just because there's a court case. He's basically calling intel right out.
Now personally I think Intel should try to compete in the GPU market, but it's pretty uncool that they've been trying to keep others out by screwing with the pricing...like making their CPU+graphics package cheaper than just buying the CPU alone, etc. I think unfortunately for intel it really is pretty obvious that they're trying to keep people out with pretty unfair tactics.
Come on intel, play nice and play fair-make your own GPUs that don't suck.
While I like both Intel and Nvidia. I wish Intel lost this one. What they have done is force out Nivida from Chipset market because they cant compete. When Intel done this to VIA and SIS, no one really cares because VIA and SIS aren't making a better chipset. They will die sooner or later.
I am still waiting for an GPU + Southbridge Solution.
I just want to point out that this is the guy who struck the semi-famous OH WHAT NOW FOOL pose in the original post about the Nvidia tablet
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/10/nvidia-tablet-mystery-solved-an-odm-tegra-prototype/
Hopefully Nvidia wins so other chip makers can come back into the market to bring variety...
One think that,i can say is if "ALL in ONE unit " unable take over old platfrom because the "NEW" is Same to "OLD" just change name and material and size only.
Just ask you about the ATI graphics? and what different between ATI and Nvidia?
DId you know ATI is only for Games and no high graphics programs.So most of the user (Before know about ATI and Nvidia graphics function ) will say ATI and Nvidia is same but is not.
