It offers affordable text messaging, email and voice messaging or Bluetooth. It doesn't offer the full connectivity of wi-fi but it should be much, much cheaper both for consumers and for airlines to deploy. If cellphone companies don't get a cut, they will not allow Asiq's software on their (dumb)phones.

Also, voice traffic is prohibited on current in-flight WiFi installations. Not because it can't work (although latency might be an issue), but because of current (airline?) policies. If these guys can convince the responsible parties, that would set quite a precedent.

Affordable voice on planes would be a double edged sword though. It would be great for business people who would otherwise miss an important conference call. It would be brutal for the passengers near by that would have to listen to the guys drivel.

Just think about the most annoying call you have had the pleasure of hearing on the ground, now picture listening to that same call in a tin sardine can 5 miles in the air. The reason is that the cables carrying the planes information or whatever are all insulated enough and they just don't create enough "noise". The reason for banning cell phones is because the cell phone towers would have so much trouble trying to transmit that far and the towers would get confused as to which tower your cell is using to place your call. Also your phone will use so much battery trying to locate them and will most likely have no signal.
This is just using your phone's Bluetooth(hopefully 3.0 as well) to transmit your texts/data/whatever to the planes satalite(spelling?), transmit it down to the cell companies, then redirect it to the cell tower to your friend/lover. It's using methods that are cheap and effecient without asking to have 100 people on their cell phones at one time :P]]>Mar 10th 2010 12:37PM
