Most
electric bikes are fairly sordid affairs, little more than an ordinary bicycle with
a motorized hub, a strap-on battery pack and
regenerative braking capabilities (if you're lucky). Not this HMK 561 electric bicycle concept, which took home an iF Design Award for some seriously forward thinking. It's not just the stylish forward rake of this juiced cruiser that's innovative, it's the frame -- composed completely of a conductive carbon fiber weave that allows the bike's body to not just pass electricity to the motors, but
actually store it like a giant capacitor. Factor in integrated lights and a pinch of that aforesaid regenerative braking at each axle, and you've just about got the bicycle of our dreams. Oh, and did we mention
a prototype has already been built?
Yeah.
thats O for awesome! I actually like the look of it .. now if the weather would co-operate .. we'd be there
@goseki I don't know where you are, but here in Toronto up north, it's been the warmest winter in a while. I mean, it's still winter and it's 12 degrees Celsius (I have no clue how much Fahrenheit that is) which is really warm. Loving the weather this year :)
@goseki this is the most beautiful thing on two wheels i ever saw o.o
@ALBGunner04 12*C = 53.6*F
Im also in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and im loving the warmth! :)
@goseki
I like the look, very nice. O and 12C is what, (12 x 9/5) + 32 ? = 53.5F
@ALBGunner04
Beautiful Bike - if you could call it that - where's the peddles?
Otherwise - Toronto Rocks!
@TjK
...except it has 4
@ALBGunner04
For a rough approximation to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit , just double the temp and add 32.
@goseki omg i know right! i hope it comes in pink and black! im so getting one!!
@goseki Awesome. One of the more expensive ways to publicly say "I f*cking hate my prostate."
@Cash9007: Bicycle seats have always crushed my balls. Now, with this battery thing, they are going to blow them away! In the explosive-hot sense.
where do u put ur feet?
@(Unverified) behind ur neck...
@(Unverified) it's a magical and innovative product - think about all the flaws after we've released it into the public.
@blland like does the throttle get stuck open!? :>
@unknownsolo
Thats how you become more attractive!
@unknownsolo LMAO, I actually laughed out loud at that. Plus one for making me laugh :P
@(Unverified)
Look at the third picture. You can see more clearly where your feet would go.
@mars212
That seems awfully high, much higher than your feet would be on the pedals of a normal bike. Or am I seeing that wrong?
@emetophobia777
I think that's where you put your knees, or the lower thighs. Either way, it really doesn't look comfortable.
@(Unverified)
Look at the last picture.
@Unverified User
Can't be any less confortable than crotch rockets.
Bitchin'
that is ugly
@haan
And it's stupid!!! :)
Those are some crazy lookin wheels
@oproski
Kind of looks like the old and heavy Dura Ace WH 7700 wheels:

It's beautiful...but where do I put my feet?
@DanMan
I'm surprised the first post wasn't this one. I agree. Where the hell do I put my feet?
@DanMan
Check the last pic, in this gallery, you can see the foot bar more clearly.
Looks pretty cool.
But I want to BE the battery!
If they could start work on that immediately after the prehensile tail thing gets competed, then that would be super.
@savagemike Want to be the battery? That'd be a standard bike then.
@Boss Skill
Excellent!
Now what do you have to report about the prehensile tail situation?
It looks like it's out of a French Cycling poster from the not too distant future!
It looks like the body goes INTO the wheel???
Also yea, will this thing electrocute you in rainy weather?
KICK ASS DESIGN AND CONCEPT
I like how I can have my feet just hanging or dragging along the road...which you prefer.
Cool Bike, If I road, I would get it...hells I just might anyway
@abedinthehouse
Just saw the renders....that concept to move the wheel is really creative
@abedinthehouse I don't think that's a render.
@abedinthehouse
Looks like it would be horrible to actually cycle, given the horrible feet position and the 4 wheel setup.
The split wheel thing would make it feel weird to corner and handling would be pretty bad.
Hope the battery is 'splosion proof...
Where are the brakes? Seat looks a bit painful too :s
@Apple Google Microsoft
Where are the motors? The motors could be set to generate power to brake.
And the lack of places to put your feet is another concerning thing. Unless you are going to lean forward and put your feet on the back hub.
What The fudge?
Woo.
It's another far fetched concept bike design that will never see the light of day.
@Wolfticket
You are correct and SHAME on Engadet for not noticing it. Just a blog of re-posting other stuff. Stinks.
Besides missing brakes and no place to put your feet, how will the power REALLY be transmitted? Red rotational arrows don't make it real. Looks impossible to propel the way it is designed. And the split wheels? They may kind of work but will be more difficult to control and the first person to crash and sue, and they'll be out of business. What's the business plan? Who is the final manufacturer? Just because you can mock it up does not make it a real prototype. Did anyone see it actually be ridden? No just some guy holding it. Whee!! Just an artists mock up and will never come to fruition. Someone has to do a better job of journalism.
@MidwestTechGuy
"They may kind of work but will be more difficult to control and the first person to crash and sue, and they'll be out of business."
It is a sad indictment of modern society (especially in the US) that the first thing people think of is to sue. I wonder if we will ever get back to tacking responsibility for our own actions........
@MidwestTechGuy
It says right in the post title that this bike is just a concept. Even if this bike is never produced, or impossible to produce, it still challenges the way we think about what is possible.
I, for one, think it's interesting. I don't have hours of ever day to spend looking at every techno-related blog ever made, so kudos to Engadget for bringing it to our attention.
sweet a remodel version of Peewee Herman's bicycle.
For everyone asking about where the feet go... look at the other pics. There are posts sticking out at where the rear wheel's... support?... connects to the frame proper. Now, how to actually put one's feet up that high is another matter. Plus, I like an electric bike that, you know, you can also pedal when you feel like it. Otherwise it's just an electric motorcycle, aka scooter, not a real bike.
All in all though, that is an achingly beautiful silhouette.
I'd hope the battery isn't made in china...
Not to be too uncouth but if you put your feet back there that would do some damage to your nuts.
That said, it looks simply incredible and would be an awesome alternative for those who live in larger cities and don't want to deal with car traffic.
