Eric Schmidt confirms Chrome OS is on schedule, on target
The last time we heard anything about the launch schedule for Google's Chrome OS it was summer of last year. At that time we were told a rather vague "second half of 2010" and, now that we're entering the second quarter of the year, forgive us if we were starting to get a bit doubtful about that timeline. But, Google's Eric Schmidt is here to assuage our fears, speaking at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit and indicating the little OS is still on track for that same, rather vague release window. That we're still not getting a more specific date makes us think we're probably looking at a release toward the end of the second half of this year, but just the same it seems like you shouldn't wipe that Chrome-powered netbook off your wishlist for this upcoming holiday season just yet.

That picture is the only thing that lead me to this article, before I even read the headline.
@abedinthehouse
If only Lord Vader was here. This thread would be an epic win.
Seriously, that guy is a laugh riot.
@abedinthehouse
Something something something something, Daaaarkside...
@Lord Vader
Careful you must be when sensing the future, Anakin. The fear of loss is a path to the dark side.
@abedinthehouse
"The target area is a small operating system, only 266 MB. The shaft is ray-shielded, so you'll have to use proton torpedoes."
"That's impossible, even for a computer!"
"It's not impossible, I used to install Linux kernels in my T-16 back home, they weren't much larger than 266 MB"
I don't know what all this trouble is about, but I'm sure it must be your fault.
Let him go! Stay on the market leader!
What an awesome pic. I'd uprank the entire post if I could.
@MRCUR And the winner of 1 whole internets goes to Engadget.
@NaJaKwa I'm shocked. Thank you. I'd like to thank the readers, and all those web servers out there that make this all possible. You know who you are.
@TimStevens
Hey Tim, I'm happy for you and all, and imma let you finish, but the iPad preorder post is the best post of all day. OF ALL DAY!!!
@TimStevens
Did you guys get the winner?
@NaJaKwa 1 internets=one whole Nobel Prize!
As long as I can have some options to ponder come holiday season, be it for myself or for a gift.
I hope it comes out 1st July. That's what I would do after reading this. ;)
I already downloaded hexeh's version to a thumb drive.
@joelaf
http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/ Some good info here, and a download.
@joelaf
I installed it on VMware, seems interesting, but I really feel restricted in what can I do. Imagine doing all on the browser! Lets see the final version, I hope it will get better and with many apps or programs available at launch.
Stay on target. Stay on target!
@AckbarsFist
I copy, Gold Leader.
@AckbarsFist You're all clear, kid! Now let's blow this thing and go home!
@AckbarsFist
AS SOON AS I SAW THIS POST, I WAS LIKE "IMA BE SO WITTY. I'LL SAY STAY ON TARGET"
But you pre-empted me. DAAAAMN
@AckbarsFist
f uckin nerds
@Lord Vader
Before you do. Pleaase watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv5iEK-IEzw. You may laugh so much that you drop your light sabre.
@Lord Vader What about a tray? Could you kill me with that?
@Lord Vader
Are you Mr. Stevens?
Great pic. Can't wait to see COS in action!
I saw a presentation of one of the newer builds of Chrome OS about a month ago. The thing that struck me about the presentation as a whole was the hostility of the audience towards the speaker. Given, it was a Computer Science department, so it was given to a bit critical, but the crowd was genuinely confused as to the purpose of Chrome OS and who would want it.
Google has a lot of work ahead of them convincing people that this is what they want on their machines.
@Delta Don't see who would want it, Ubuntu netbook build may be limited but it is a giant step up from Chrome OS. Lets just stick with android for now.
Eric, you've turned off your targeting system...Is something wrong?
@haubey
Larry, Sergey, let's close it up. We're going in. We're going in full throttle. That ought to keep those fanboys off our back.
@gerrrg *Pew pew pew*
So Google originally said 2H2010, they still say 2H2010, and this article is about how you doubted that? Great non-story. Good work!
@dkratter14 If you think a company sticking to their targeted release date isn't news you don't follow tech that closely.
@Riles
JooJoo
@dkratter14
Upranked both of you.
God I love Star Wars!
Whats interesting though is that Chrome OS, a could based operating system, is actually larger in storage footprint than some non-could based small Linux distros like DSL or Puppy.
Yeah but it going to be as easy as hitting womp rats in my T-16 on Tatooine?
Anyone know if you will be able to put Chrome OS, on an Android tablet?
IT"S A TRAP!!!!1
If you are going to photochop a picture.. at least.. AT LEAST apply an aging filter to the chrome logo to make it look half way decent. GAH!@!
That is strange, I have it on my triple boot Mini 9. Hackintosh, Ubuntu 9.10, and Hexxeh's Chromium OS build.
It is fast. 2 second boot off SSD
lol at the pic
Not a fan of Chrome at all, I much prefer a traditional lightweight Linux OS. For most casual users, everything now revolves around the web, but that doesn't mean that I want an OS basically running out of a web browser.
@johnacash
I agree. I'm completely underwhelmed by this OS. There is no appeal to me.
People moan about iPad (very loudly) but at least you can install binaries on it, use it without a network connection, play 3D games on it.
None of which you'll be able to do on Chrome OS at launch.
@johnacash
I'm more concerned about the privacy issues. Google's objective is essentially analyze and track your behavior on the web – now it's going to track everything I do (even when I'm not using a web browser).
No thanks.
Mmm the first protontorpedo's missed their target! Will Chrome OS will do the same, or will Mark Hamill come to the rescue?
