Yes, to plan and sit down and watch a movie start to finish I can deal with (but not like) having to wear glasses, but for casual TV viewing it's just not going to work.  Mom's not going to be in the kitchen cooking and glancing at a TV wearing glasses. They made a 3D solution where you can use the cheap passive polarized glasses, whereas most everyone else is using the cheaper (for the TV) active shutter glasses that cost ~$100 per pair. The tech is really simple - you project two pictures: the left eye picture in a vertically polarised light and right eye picture in a horizontally polarised light. Then you put on glasses where the left eye has a piece of glass that is vertically polarised and right eye is horizontally polarised.<br><br>The polarization difference will make sure that the image for the right eye does not enter into the left eye.<br><br>Th glasses are cheap and trivial to make and they can be any shape or size. They can even be rimless. (Well technically they just darken one lens of the glasses, but you get the point)<br><br>Active shutter has another horrible problem - it halves the framerate of you screen. If 100 Hz is a smooth picture, then you need to get a 200 Hz 3D TV to get the same smoothness, because each of your eyes will be only seeing half of the frames. Whether by polarization, shutters, color filters, or lenticular lenses, the available brightness is always cut in half so that each eye sees a unique image.  The only exception is for head-mounted displays that use a display per eye.<br><br>However, in a properly adjusted setup, everything will seem as bright as it is supposed to be (when viewed in 3D). Active shutter combined with DLP is a sight to behold with zero crosstalk/ghosting.  Even at the Sony 4k Digital 3D theater I went to, the polarized tech still had crosstalk to each eye from the other picture.  That theater was the best 3D I've ever seen, but not because of the glasses - that was the weakness actually, but the screen was so sharp. Active shutter being the digital. What I'm curious about is the difference between an active shutter refresh rate of 120hz vs 240hz. Will the higher refresh rate let you perceive more brightness?<br><br>If you think about a fan spinning fast you get more transparency than opacity. In theory you should be able to perceive a brighter picture using active shutter than polarized glasses. In 3D there are two pictures - one for the right eye and one for the left eye. Any 3D technology *must* block the left-eye picture from the right eye and via versa, so every 3D technology always is half the brightness. A fan with the same proportion of blades to spaces will always let trough the same proportion of light, regardless of the rotation speed.<br><br>Oh and those 120Hz 3D TVs have the *overall* frequency of 120Hz, which means that each eye only gets 60Hz. It's kind of like when I first wrapped my head around spacetime. <br><br>Yes, one eye is always in the closed state so you would think the total light is halved. Look at a bright light then close your eyes wherever you are and your eyes seem to retain the light momentarily. However if you toggle the light in your room real quick your eyes don't retain the darkness in the same way. Most companies working on TVs over 70 inches quadruple the resolution so it doesn't look pixelated.   I don't think I read anything about that so far on the HDI sets being 4K resolution but I may have missed it.<br><br>If this has a good looking 4k picture in 2D I'd be interested.   Rumor had it that Kuro had plans for a 4k 75" and larger screen right before they pulled the plug. The big problem for me is the price.
