I'm sure there are some editors who know phones better, others who know netbooks better, and so on and so forth. Just like anyone else, I'm sure there are gaps in their knowledge.

As for the response about people who hack phones to get them to run on the other network, I was talking about through officially sanctioned means.

I knew that Verizon has the "Any Phone" policy, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully taking advantage of that. And with Sprint, you have to get really lucky and get a tech who just doesn't care anymore in order to get someone to add a non-Sprint ESN to their database so it can get activated.

But in that case, if that's your plan, then guess what, you don't need a phone that isn't 'carrier-locked'. All CDMA phone ESNs are tied to one network or the other.

Anyway, yes, maybe I misspoke when I said never. In rare cases, maybe it's possible. That doesn't change the fact that in general, it's not possible to switch between the two. In addition, there is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA phone. You can reprogram the ESN (well, since we're getting technical, MEID, since they ran out of ESNs a while back) on many phones, but still, that doesn't make it unlocked. The word unlocked just plain doesn't apply to a CDMA phone.

Now, I'm not going to deny that Palm should include an unlocked GSM phone as part of this program, though it may be the case that upcoming carrier agreements with AT&T may preclude that. But to say that the phones shouldn't be carrier locked, when they're selling mostly CDMA ones makes no sense at all. That becomes even more so, when changing the software that the phone is running (note, this can't unlock the radio of the phone) to another carrier, is pretty much as simple as reflashing it with a different webOS Doctor.

Joe H

Comments on

Booo!!!would have jumped on this lol!!

Evodadi

Comments on

Palm has a deathwish or something...

MZLweasel

Comments on

I've actually thought about going down and grabbing a Telcel Pre...anything illegal about it? Just make the emulator better, it's free for everyone and will attract way more developers than lowering the price of a phone on a locked in carrier. The 1.4 update was a step in the right direction, but the fact is that Palm has to be faster and more nimble than alot of the big platforms for a significant time before many will start buying in. WebOS needs to be more responsive, get GPU acceleration in there.

nick

Comments on

Another bad step for palm, no GSM version is really a bad move. Palm needs more dev's to take advantage of the OS and hardware fully to take advantage of the real potential of the phone. Otherwise with no really impressive apps or features it seems that sales will not come and Palm's stock price will continue to plummet. Hopefully Palm does something to make themselves a better contender in the smartphone market.

Rizwan

Comments on

You know what, screw you Palm.
