But nowadays, even a slight similarity of an OS to the iPhone scares me. Don't want to see an Apple vs MS patent deathmatch. Though I believe the cross licensing b/w Apple and MS, which Nilay was talking about would prevent that.

This is a critical piece of information I need before I can make a decision on whether to purchase the HD2 or wait for a WinP7 piece of hardware. As it stands, it is possible that the HD2 running WinMo 6.5 will be more capable/versatile/powerful package than the new operating system running on hardware this fall/winter.

This could be true, but IMO this is a dumb way to analyze the situation. Ok, so given this scenario, multitasking is less likely? I'd say with or without this multitasking is just as likely, this is just a way that doesn't require to you multitask to get the alerts you need (therefore save processing power), hence a great feature with or without multitasking. They are dumbing down the platform with this closed app store and no multitasking crap. Windows Mobile 6.5 in many regards is still better in my eyes, and I'm going to get an HD2. Everybody keeps forgetting that the overwhelming majority of iPhone users are teens who buy iPhones because of the brand and the hipster pr of apple, and the older generations just doesn't care, everything they buy is usually a huge upgrade, hence they are happy as well.

The >real< competition is that of Android VS WinMo (haven't seen any WebOs in Europe, so I can't count them to being one of the "big boys", although it looks great, palm should deff. make more phones)

I would say WebOS had the comprise of only Mojo (javascript) apps. But now that the PDK is in public beta, anyone can write C/C++ apps for it.
