Samsung Windows Phone 7 Series handset makes the scene
Here's a fun little surprise: Microsoft's Joe Belfiore just ran through a Windows Phone 7 Series demo on an as-yet unannounced Samsung device here at MIX. Apart from hints at an OLED screen, we don't much about the specific hardware, but Joe also showed off a slide of the WP7S minimum requirements, so we can tell you it has at least 256MB of RAM and 8GB of flash, as well as DirectX9 acceleration. We're due to meet with Joe in just a few, so we'll obviously dig for more -- stay tuned!

this keeps getting better!
@unwynd
And if they keep getting phones as slim as that first LG!
@unwynd
by the end of the wednesday i will have run out of pants to change into...
God I hope HTC's first Windows Mobile 7 Series is a HD2 with a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon CPU, 1GB ram, and a 4.3" OLED screen.
I can't even imagine how many of these would sell with lots of marketing.
/drool
@treats i would buy that without second thought. i dont like how plasticy the Samsung looks the LG looks decent, but i want a developer to come out with something pretty much exactly what they have been using as the demo unit. also would love to see a slightly larger version of the Zune HD, that is one of the best designs ive seen in a while. plus ive had one since launch with no scratches at all. my iPhone got its first scratch within a few hours (put it in my pocket, oh no!)
@unwynd
256MB RAM and 8GB flash? It's better than my laptop of not so long ago...
@unwynd
The battery ran out? They must have been running Flash on that device.
@treats I hope a Sammy phone comes out with the same specs you mentioned but a Super AMOLED screen.
@treats exactly what I want.
cool
... but just an Omnia HD copy
@Maemo
Which is not good-looking
@Maemo
Hmm..Not a copy maybe but IT IS the Omnia HD period only with WP7 on it instead of S60 5th.Personally I don't see any probs barring 2 things:-the OS (beta until proven otherwise this coming launch) and of course if Mr.Anphase would have to start yet another thesis to Samsung for what's plausibly a repeat of the orig i8910's firmware crapola.
Look at that, its called Beauty. Full Keyboard and all.
Makes me kind of wish I didn't sell my HD2, you know the boys from XDA will have it working a few days after release.
@xenon73 would you recommend a HD2? Are you really confident that XDA will come up with a Patch? Should I just wait...
@dennyengster i seriously doubt that xda will pull it off. the main reason for such high hardware requirements is for no lag and this is a whole new os not a build upon 6.5.3.
Loving Microsoft Soooo Much Right Now!!
@abedinthehouse
is just so bizarre... couple years ago we hated Microsoft... now Apple became more and more unsympathetic with their closed walled garden iPhone concept ...
niiiiice
265MB of RAM? That's going to be a hard number to hit.
@chaoslost200
Why do you say that?
There are phones out now that have at least 256...the iphone 3gs, and several android phones I believe.
@toptekjon That's very true, but 265MB of RAM would require some interesting combinations of modules to achieve. I'm pretty sure the post is supposed to say 256MB of RAM but somebody got a little dyslexic and interposed the 5 and 6.
@chaoslost200 Samsung is also developing a 1gb chip of mobile DDR2 RAM, so that's nearly quadruple the amount needed. If you don't believe me, then go to the business section of the site and look in the mobile ram section, under DDR2.
@ohanmer Are you daft? What does 1GB chips have to do with 265MB? Nobody anywhere makes 265MB chips of memory... it's not a multiple of 8, you'd have to use one 256MB chip, one 8MB chip and a 1MB chip neither of the last two are made these days (At least not in large numbers) as far as I know...
@chaoslost200
Yeah, look at the slide. the picture shows 256. it was just a typo (just like "Apart from hints at an OLED screen, we don't [know] much about..." with the exclusion of the know)
All this WP7S looks really cool, and it will probably end up replacing my iPhone 3G when the contract expires. I just really hope the console support for their apps doesn't stop at the XBOX. I would love to experience that functionality on my PS3 as well, but thats probably quite a bit to hope for.
@tolarindr Haha, you're dreaming buddy! Why not wish for Wii support and Apple App Store purchases too?
@tolarindr: Sony is only interested in putting PSN on Sony branded devices, as far as I've seen... last month they announced PSN for SE phones, but other than saying they're gonna do it, in some form, at some time, there's precious little info...
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27272/PSN_To_Be_Included_In_Sony_Ericsson_Phones.php
@Alan Strangis
tyvm for the info!
@Palomino
A man can dream, can't he!? For sure not a make or break aspect for me, I just like the idea of being able to play the exact same game on my mobile device and my console... just so happens my consoles of choice are PC and PS3! Maybe I can retain a little hope for this functionality coming to my PC. lol.
@tolarindr
Sure that will happen as soon as Sony starts using XNA to make games for PS3. aka NEVER.
@cool8man
Im aware that those games would not come from sony. But what's to say microsoft wont make them PS3 compatible. the reasons may be over my head if it gets down to programming languages and them not being compatible inherently or something. But if it's even possible, theres lots of money to be made here by microsoft. Maybe they want to keep the tech proprietary in order to draw people to the XBOX, but i REFUSE!
For our next demo... the Dell Mini 5! (please??)
8Gb on board flash is sweet! I hope they still allow micro SD expansion.
@kjb434 According to this site it is has expandable micro SD up to 32GB. http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8910_omnia_hd-2691.php
That's an i8910HD with a bit smaller screen.
http://www.gadgetlite.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/orange-samsung-omnia-hd-i8910.jpg
Should kinda be affordable now !
I just realized how the Windows logo perfectly represents the "Live Tiles" on the start screen as an icon :)
look at that ass right there, oh yeah
I don't know how complete this build is of WP7, but from what I saw of Microsoft's live presentation regarding their games, it's quite snappy and responsive. I'm honestly impressed with the performance of this OS. Though it makes sense given that the bare minimum specs for it are the Snapdragon.
The samsung model sure is shiny - maybe too shiny.
@jaxim
Speaking of the several models that they showed up there, am I the only one who thought it sounded like he said "hezeus" for the Asus hardware?
Does this scene look familiar to the Apple Vs MS of back in the day. Apple still stick to their own hard and MS is building a great useful OS that any manufacture will be to build upon? I know apple has a good head start but in due time this could very well swing around quickly. Not hating on the Iphone since obviously its a loved device.
@Balindos
Agreed...
I love my iphone, but I'm more than ready to dump it if something better comes along....and so far, WP7 looks better to me.
Can't wait to see what they do with xbox integration. I want a gears of war style game on my phone!! (Wouldn't have thought that's possible, but if you played NOVA on the iphone, you'll see what I mean. FPS/3rd person shooters can be done on touch screens.)
The only issue I have is with the SUPER DUPER SIZED FONTS FOR THE VISION IMPAIRED...if they make that customizable so that I can see full words on one screen, I'm sold.
@toptekjon i agree. if apple doesnt do something crazy this summer. i'm just gonna switch to winmo 7.
@toptekjon
right there with ya buddy. Unless apple really wows us this year they're going to lose a lot of customers to this new platform.
OMG there is a disturbance in the force. An article has been pulled. I clicked on a recent article with WP7S integrated with Xbox and....nothing happened.
Waiting to see what HTC comes up with! Also since Dell is an anouncEd patner, slapping this instead of android on the mini 5 would send multiple orgasms my way!
@bySeon me too! can you imagine the HD3 running this? that serious pr0n right there.
