GameBoy Advance micro. 'Nuff said. This is basically the way Nintendo has worked:

1) Introduce new model, everyone goes gaga for it, they buy it.

2) Introduce improved model, make it smaller, and add features people have said would make the original model better, or just make it prettier.

3) Introduce another model, usually with another radically new form factor, possibly add stuff that's not really needed but fun, maybe add some more stuff people have been wanting for a while as well.

With the DS, Nintendo took a 4th step and made a ginormous model, but given the types of people they've attracted with the platform (read: your grandma), that move makes sense, and gets them to double dip.

Introducing the successor to the DS doesn't really seem out of the question.

I'm starting to think that was just Nintendo saving face for all the gamers out there. Looking at things now, calling it the GameBoy DS would have likely turned off new gamers to the system (people know what GameBoy was, and might already have registered opinions about it), and given it's been known as the DS since 2004, so nearly 6 years, that would be a lot of backtracking and potentially confusing to the casual market if they were to suddenly name the successor with the GameBoy branding. Sounds stupid, I know, but things are like that.

A guy at Best Buy told me that people seemed to be buying Blu-ray players more than HD-DVD simply because Blu-ray:

1) Sounded more futuristic.

2) Was a term they had never heard before, so they were genuinely curious about it.
