Yes, Windows Phone 7 Series can make a phone call
Sure, we've been pushing Microsoft hard for Windows Phone 7 Series details like copy and paste (no) and multitasking (no), but we just realized that we've never actually seen a 7 Series device... make a phone call. A little running around later and we've got two demo handsets calling each other. We're told that the little white arrow on the call panel will eventually bring up options like conference calling, speakerphone, and mute, but it's not working yet -- and one of the phones seems to think it's running on Cingular, so either time travel is an unannounced feature of the OS or Microsoft still has some work to do. Video after the break.
P.S. They're just demo SIMs, but we're sure the poor PR folks babysitting the devices would appreciate it if you didn't call the numbers, okay? Be nice.

Video not available at the moment.
@Federaly ... its working
@Federaly wow what is wron with that phone on the left? why does it fade out and die like that? im really looking forward to windows 9 so i can copy and paste things
@emopoops Screen timeout still set to default 15sec maybe?
HELL IM CALLING THOSE PHONES RIGHT NOW
maybe I can ask them directly why there was no copy paste and when video calling will come in..
.....ring......ring....ring....ring..................
@emopoops most likely the proximity sensor picked up the hand and shut off the screen like it will when the phone is close to your face.
@ChrisSsk : I really, really wish the status bar (it only shows up contextually when its 'most' needed, like in this phone call demo) would work the same way it does on the Zune HD, where it shows a status screen instead with one side button. The 'hidden' status screen on the Zune HD works very well to hide away the playback controls and battery life when you don't need to see it, and pops up a translucent screen when you do, by clicking on the Zune's side button. It's pretty nifty, and I wished they took this route with WP7S phones.
@abedinthehouse Yes please do and let them know that even the iPhone has evolved in the last three years and phones now a days need copy/paste, multitasking, and a open environment
@emopoops
That's because he put his hand over the screen. Just like most of the touchscreen smartphones, they shut off when they sense something like your face near it so you don't press anything while you are on a call.
But Can it Copy & paste?
@L3 Chiffr3 Come on man, Copy and Paste is so Win Mob 6.5
@Dsunbury WTH copy&paste is a MUST for a smartphone platform. The iPhone has it as well. nuff said.
Everyone who wants copy&paste SIGN THIS PETITION: http://tr.im/Sdiv !!!
@mschmidler Hey, I was being sarcastic ;-)
@L3 Chiffr3
Like I said before... I bet there will be some Copy & paste on WP7, it will just be limited.. that's it! Plus you only need Copy & paste for internet explorer, sms, some kind of folder directory and maps...
@L3 Chiffr3
i dont remember where, i think it was the source story of the endgadget article, but there was an update stating that the guy who made the original statement responded, saying that he meant to say that the demo devices currently do not have copy and paste, but the development team is trying to implement it BEFORE the RTM.
@beckhams777
Stop telling me what I need and don't need.
That's if you go by what's available today. Who knows what will be released on the marketplace in the future? Maybe I want to copy something from an application so I can search for it in internet explorer. Maybe I want to copy a link inside an application so I can paste it in a text message.
You'll never know when you'll decide it would just be easier to copy and paste something. Limiting copy and paste is almost as stupid as not having it.
@L3 Chiffr3
I have to say I'm stunned they could make such an obviously stupid mistake by not including copy and paste. It took Apple quite a while to get that fixed and they are quite nimble compared to MS. We may never see copy and paste for WP7s if it ever catches on - probably won't with a long ass name mile WP7S instead of WM7.
@L3 Chiffr3
Since when does copy and past go out of style?
@L3 Chiffr3
Surely MS has seen the backlash by now regarding the lack of copypasta. I would love to see some sort of official response from them on the matter.
The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if they're trying to figure out how to circumvent some vague Apple-held patent before even committing to so much as a maybe regarding the functionality.
@L3 Chiffr3 No, they can't put copy&paste in there. Apple invented copy&paste on the smartphone and has a patent on it.
@LEDfoot That is totally untrue. Windows Mobile and Symbian smart phones have been able to copy and paste way before the iPhone was a twinkle in Apple's eye. Get your facts straight.
@jefe00 *woosh*
@L3 Chiffr3
Someone's going to make a cut and past text messaging app or some sort of cut and paste app. Don't worry, it's not a big deal.
@mschmidler liar. They only added it later, and as has been pointed out, with good execution, you don't need copy/paste in any main part of the OS.
Exceptions include the browser, SMS (usually only from the browser), and apps that take custom input.
@shoxite That's duplication of an apple feature, prepare to be sued.
Yes, But Can it Copy & Paste?
Thanks God!!
I was thinking Microsoft will also limit this functionality like copy paste.
But no thanks. No copy paste = no buy.
@ewlung : Don't be so sure about the copy & paste yet. I think I recalled someone saying the demo device don't have it yet, but most likely should before it gets to RTM.
ZOMG it makes calls :)
@oringal
Thank god for that!
@oringal
But you can only call other Windows Phone 7 phones.
Those transition effects are so annoying, tho. Maybe they look good at first, but imagine waiting for that stupid animation anytime you want to do something.
This OS is just disappointing overall. I don't get the hype, at all. Is it because it looks 'different'?
@oringal : Microsoft continues to raise the bar! :)
@oringal
it seems as though its set up to be able to do other things while in a call as well, where the call might just become a bar at the top (like the notification bar), and i really hope there's multitasking while making phone calls at least. like checking the map to give directions to my friend.
@ArhcAngel Not true, if you have a Android phone, you can run MONO on it which will allow it to interoperate with a WinMo phone.
@oringal Already one step ahead of my iPhone.
Last straw was broken yesterday with no copy/paste. Nexus One on AT&T for me.
@Leindurstit agreed - WP7S just got f*cked up in my mind. Nexus One, come to Sprint, baby, and I'm buyin!
@ACEACEACE
What does Word Perfect 7 for Solaris have to do with this thread?
@ArhcAngel I get the joke but *facepalm*
@Leindurstit Thats what I was thinking my 3Gs is in the process of being sold now
@ACEACEACE
Lucky you. LMAO
Next step, incorporate Video into those calls...but I'm sure some service provider app will provide it.
If you do I imagine it zooms in on their big face.
I worry about 7 Series. It seems to have started off with so much promise and is now slowly devolving into a souped-up iPhone OS.
Push notifications just don't cut it; I don't see why an elegant solution to multi-tasking can't be found, they seem to be patronising the end-users, thinking people will just leave dozens of apps running.
I know it's a bit off-topic for this post but over the past few days we've had any semblance of multi-tasking ruled out as well as side-loading apps, any customization and even copy and paste.
These tiles just seem like Sense UI and the only redeeming feature I can see is in gaming. I really hope Microsoft proves me wrong because I'm sick of my locked-down iPhone and am worried about turning to Android (fragmentation), WebOS (not many developers) and don't get me started on Nokia.
Please Microsoft, save us, save us all.
@Jamesy Sorry to tell you nobody does locked down like Microsoft. Oh btw just jailbreak your iPhone if you want more control. Just down forget you lose the security that the locked down platform gives you if you jailbreak.
@dxdragon
Yeah, my iPhone is jailbroken and there are some good corrections to the OS. Multitasking works great with backgrounder and ProSwitcher/Circuitous.
The vast majority of the jailbreak scene is purely productive. SBSettings and Winterboard, etc. are all brilliant apps; if only Apple would recognize this, it's made my phone twice as useable.
We need a frankenstein OS: the openness of Android, the finish of iPhone OS, the gaming and Windows integration of 7 series and multi-tasking of WebOS.
A man can dream, can't he?
@Jamesy I think part of what wp7 is doing with the hubs is eliminating the need for multitasking.... the idea of combining similar services together. I still wish it did have true multitasking but as a pre user currently I don't really keep a bunch of stuff open all the time.
It eats battery life like crazy when you keep certain combinations of cards open. I imagine this is part of the reason for no multitasking.
I think it is designed to be a better version of the iphone. The model of wm6 failed and the iphone didn't so they moved their platform closer to the "winning" way of thinking.
Where wp7 will "win" is in the media and gaming aspects. This is the xbox portable so you will have millions of people get it for that alone. It also has the zunepass & netflix stuff which makes it a compelling device for many more as well.
@Jamesy That my friend would be the best phone around and I second that!
