Sprint had promised a
first-quarter update for its
Touch Pro2 way back in January, and sure enough, it's delivered the
Windows Mobile 6.5 boost right on time. It might not have as much punch now that we know everything there is to know about Windows Phone 7 Series, of course, but it's still a pretty big deal -- the Touch Pro2 remains one of the best Microsoft-powered phones you can buy in the States, and unlike AT&T's
Tilt2, it launched with that grubby old WinMo 6.1. It's available now, complete with Sense "enhancements" and a variety of bug fixes -- so if you've got one of these bad boys in your pocket, it seems like a must-grab.
I'm sticking with 6.1 I don't like the start grid.
@Kloc Welcome to 2010
It's about freakin time
@Kloc
Yeah, I'm probably rolling back as well. The new start menu is terrible, and they completely removed the HTC Task Manager. I hope they fix that
@EGOvoruhk There is something already out there http://www.forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1641602&postcount=5
I'm pretty sure tp2 owners flashed roms to theirs already.
@n8equalsd yeah, that's pretty much the first thing I did
@n8equalsd yessir
@n8equalsd
yea and this is exactly why i flash custom roms, it's March and the phone came out in like October and they are just now getting out an update i've had (unofficially) since i got the phone. well that and to get rid of the crapware.
This is mind blowing!!!
...just not the same as Andriod.
@dcnoren well obviously, it's windows mobile.
@Brent1700 You think?
@dcnoren well duh, of course he thinks. if he didn't, he would be thoughtless
@dcnoren
you can run both android and WM on the touch pro 2
...psych! actually the update's not gonna roll out on time, and is coming "soon".
o no wait, htc and sprint got their shit together and can roll out an update properly...
:P
@spasewalkr Hahaha, true to that. I love Sprint. Google Nexus One AND HTC Supersonic + 4G. Everyone should catch up to that, but Verizon is still at least a year behind
And believe it or not, some people actually prefer their Windows 6.5 with Sense UI phones over Android's widgety interface. HTC really did a great job with their Windows Mobile Sense UI implementation-it actually looks nicer than the Android version in a lot of ways.
And of course the tp2 has an almost usable android port now anyway that can be launched from windows.
PocketNow posted some screen captures of sense 2.5 and the system info box earlier this morning - http://pocketnow.com/software-1/sprint-releases-windows-mobile-65-with-sense-25-for-htc-touch-pro2
Ive been using it all day. Funny, i don't remember purchasing an HD2...
@FG1 How do you like the HD2 with the new update?
@dennyengster i won't be going back to wm6.1 that's fo sho
Palm: you need new hardware, this would be perfect, with a capacitive super amoled screen. Oh and maybe a better camera.
I'd rather have 6.5 than 7.
@PhoenixFox Me too. Win 6.5 w/ sense looks way bettter than Win 7
@Kunta Kinte I know, it's awesome!
Saa Weet!!! Finally!
Really HTC? A 183MB download at 8KB/s? 7 hour download!
@rancemo
wow that sucks i downloaded 5 or 10 mintues after they released it last night and it still took me at least 45 mintues. my download speed went from 190kbps to 76 by the time it reached half of the of the download.
This thing is sick!!!! its awesome i stayed up all night refreshing the download page until they posted it:)
There are some differences from the 6.1 rom but the new things are worth the upgrade.
the Task Manager is a .cab away so plesae don't start complaining about the Taks Manager. (Beauty of windows mobile)...i also just installed a cab that gives you 16 shortcuts in the homescreen and its awesome, you migh not even need to hit that start menu in a while.
It sucks alot of RAM but as long as you don't see that your ram is constantly at 80% or higher your going to be ok becuase the phone performs good even when that much ram is being used. The music tab automatically downloads album art!!! BIG PLUS for me.
It also supports DRM so quess what, i have a Zune pass and don't need to own a Zune !!! hahahahaha
Just a little thing, but isn't Sense the UI for Android and TouchFLO for WinMo?
@foolforfood yep to bad there is no update for the original pro. I cant decide between tp 3 that is bound to come out or the super sonic.
@foolforfood
Not any more. TouchFLO has become Sense.
@hated one
are you kiddin me? this is an awesome phone.
I think you just dont know how to use it. Its a power user phone, not just for flicking through your pictures and playing bejeweled.
Can someone tell me how to download it? I went to Windows Update, and it says I am up to date, but I have 6.1
Thanks
@Espo1963 You need to download it to your computer here is the link
http://member.america.htc.com/download/RomCode/HTC%20Touch%20Pro2%20(Sprint)/HTC%20Touch%20PRO2%20MR1.exe
Also you need to have activesync or windows mobile device center (vista/W7) installed and connected to your phone
Then you just run the .exe and follow the instructions.
@ChrisEngr Try this link http://www.htc.com/us/support/touch-pro2-sprint/downloads and click download it is 182.52 MB
I am getting 7 kb, 8 hours download. That's ridiculous. What did they do rig up a Nexus One as a server.
This takes FOREVER TO DOWNLOAD....WHY!!! Makes no Sense UI.
I downloaded a Update for my mothers Touch pro in 3 Mins and it was 90MB. Why should twice that take 7-8 Hours?!
But i digress...ive essentially waited Since Sept 9th for a 6.5 Update...i guess starting the download...leaving the house, goin to the mall, grocery shoppin, and coming home just to see its only at 65% isnt as long of a wait.
Why bother with this update when you can run Android on it? (:
@Johnny Rockets
Because the Android For the TP2 still lacks idk...Bluetooth, GPS, all aspects of SOUND..Keyboard backlight isnt recognized, Camera use, MMS...You kno, the little things.
@Johnny Rockets : Why bother when you can get WinMo 6.5 on this?
Fuck this- im stilll waiting for an update to the FIRST GODDAMNED TOUCH PRO.
The performance of this thing is BALLS. only reason i didnt smash it is becasue im too poor to get a new phone
its the crapiest running phone ive ever had. with the best friggin keyboard ever.
shit x2
@king_electric_warmonger,
Whats up buddy i was reading your comment and i know the pain you suffer too well but i got good news but it all depends on what phone carrier you have, if it happens to be sprint your in luck my friend to join the touch pro 2 ranks here is what you do, i hope you still have insurance, dail *2 on your phone ask right away for tech support tell them your phone screen freezes all the time and it is frozen right now, now this may take more than once to try or maybe on the first try, but what going to happen when you tell them it freezes tell them you want a replacement phone and your no where near a sprint store to take it to get fix at the moment, two things will happen there going give you a choice of replacement phones, i hope they say a touch pro 2 but if they do not ask is the touch pro a replacement option if they say its out of stock ask them can you call back later to try again see if they have one in stock later, or ask the the person to aslk the supervisor can they send you a new one as a replacement your going through hell with the one you have now and more than likely they send you a replacement one or a brand new touch pro but you got to see if they offer it to you as a replacement and if not ask and just keep up now if you get somene not playin ball with you just hang up and try again, i did it on the first try and i am good to go, good luck bro.
@king_electric_warmonger Can't you just install a ROM from xda? I'm assuming the Touch Pro and Fuze can use the same ROM, just maybe with a different radio (they're separate).
I have a Fuze running what may or may not still be the latest Energy ROM and it kicks absolute ass. It is WAY better in most ways than all but the top-end current phones (I'm sure the Droid is better, but there aren't many other phones I'd rather have - even the Tilt2 isn't much of an upgrade beyond the screen size). It's as updated as any WinMo 6.5 phone can be and it has all sorts of "enhancements" beyond what either HTC or MS programmed in. Plus it's had all of the proprietary carrier crapware removed. It's really a smooth running, beautiful to look at and fun to use phone.
When I first got it, the built-in ROM was so bad that it had to be rebooted twice a day, and even when it worked, it was SLOOOOOOW. Everybody complained about it, not just me. But what a difference a new ROM makes.
@king_electric_warmonger Put Android on it. The TP / Diamond Android port is pretty polished these days.
@badasscat
i wish i did know how to root it- even with the instructions, its ultra complicated. soem of the instructions i saw were pc based- if im not mistakes- so thats no dice (mac based).
I would be more comfortable tryign it if i i knew how to troubleshoot it if anything (it will!) go wrong...
Verizon will be the last to give me an 6.5 update. Now there's a shocker,
Any word out there on if/when Telus will offer the 6.5 upgrade??? I'm dyin here!
@thebigh just get http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86489 .
*yawn* this would have been nice in august 2009....before everyone in the world flashed their TP2 with a custom ROM.
