At CES there were some flexible displays seen at work.
pretty amazing but i really want somethin that i can bend and such, say a computer that is all flexable or at least mostly that works with multuple accleromators to create a ever shifting 4d ui the 4th deminsion being the digital part

@jascop Technically the 4th Dimension is time. But you could use dimensions 1,2,3 and possible the yet unnamed 5? I'm not entirely sure if the fifth is actually something, or just imaginary. But the fourth is already taken, better luck next time.

I'd like to see a display that I can crumple up into a ball, shove it in my back pocket and only take it out after driving for about six hours cause the balled up dis-puter in my pocket is now causing pain. Only to be unfurled and perfect as the day it was bought.

flexible displays are all nice but i still can't see how they're actually going to be applied on a device. Maybe just for structures that have curves and aren't flexible?

It would be good for cellphones because the strain pockets and ect put on the screen. Other than that no clue.

Think you're building an iPhone. You stack up front panel, touchscreen, and LCD, which means 1+1+2 = 4 panes of 3.5" glass, or huge 7.2" glass panel for just one origami'd device(forget they differ in thickness). Now if we could just stick a flexible display with optical touch sensor to back of the front panel...

Sorta like the other commentor.
So you open your laptop lid and the screen like oragami unfolds. Now your 15" laptop has a 3 wide, 2 high screen, let's say hmm 40" and then as you close the lid those 40" inches of glorious screen real estate fold back in.
Sweet, or maybe just so big u can't use it properly.
Or a roll out tv light weight that clips to a wall.
Or a fold out map that is like a giant screen with live touch responsive data displayed.
I want that for my next ipad!:0

@WindowsPhone7Series Says who, you? And your claim to fame is? Playing flash games? LOL. That's gotta be some mighty awesome amunition you have there to justify your comment on the iPad. I love the experience a purpose built OS gives you on a purpose built device. Have used probably a dozen different smart phones and netbooks and all had one thing in common - crap experience and slow response.
I don't need to do programming or desktop publishing or database queries on a tablet - that's why I own desktops and laptops. What I want from a tablet is a fast, responsive and consistent experience on a robust OS. That's what the iPhone gave us a taste of and that's what the iPad will build on.
@Dsunbury There is also no multi-tasking and also the shitty specs of the device itself.
@Spankerer That's your opinion, or should I say with respects to your purpose for such a device. For my purpose it will be perfectly fine. I don't have any interest on multitasking or a camera or external storage, not in a tablet, and not in this form factor. Oh, and just to be clear, if the HP slate was being released with a purpose built OS (rather than forcing a full win 7 install) I would happily buy that too.
@ttennebk It's HP, and unlike apple they actually develop new technology. Apple just takes existing tech and gives it to very good industrial designers.
HP will use it in their slate devices.

You know, some people will actually benefit from it and it actually turned out to be far better for them than the fail everyone is making it out to be. Me being one of them, I'll tell you why I bought it so perhaps at least a few people will quit the overplayed comments and realize that there is a market for it.
More than anything, I need a textbook replacement device. As a Physics/Math double major that maxes out credits every semester, I have to carry around a huge stack of books all the time, even for a simple thing like homework. Not to mention, professors/advisors will recommend that I get certain books for out of class study and reference, but I can't afford to drop $50-200 on a side reference book. uTorrent will be my friend, and I will be able to carry around my whole collection of books all the time with less load than a single one. Color display is necessary here.
I need an iPod replacement. I'm looking for 64GB. I almost only use it through my car speakers so size doesn't matter.
I'd like a portable video player with a decent sized screen so me and maybe another person or so can enjoy a movie on the go. The iPad will also function as a movie player in the car for my passengers when I go on long trips. The screen is bigger than most in-car DVD players. If I can get location data through wifi tethering with my droid, I will use the big display for GPS too.
I need something I can present from at research conferences. Having the ability to give a personal version of my talk when I'm not up on stage would be a huge benefit. The Keynote app's live markup will kick ass for presentations and the iPad's size will be great for personal presentations. It will also allow me to open up Numbers and show off data sets on a personal level as well.
I'm getting a laptop soon but I need something with word processing, slide show, and spreadsheet capabilities to hold me over. Also, I'll be going for a desktop replacement laptop so I need something that can fill in when I don't want to carry around a 17" book. I don't want a netbook because that would just be a second laptop which is just a waste and fails on other levels (textbooks, battery, and even portability to an extent).
I live with my significant other but I have my desktop at "my house". When I get my big laptop that will probably stay at her house most of the time. I leave my computers on mostly 24/7 so something portable that could VNC to both would be awesome.
I'm am an Android user. I'm sold on that now, and it's not changing anytime soon. I don't want a giant copy of my Droid (read: android tablet). I won't be getting an iPhone but I want to have that experience with their app market etc. I'm not carrying around another pocket device so an iPod Touch would be a waste (like I said I only use music in the car)...what would be good is a.......hmm......giant iPhone!
Board games! nuff said.
A digital clipboard spreadsheet cruncher for the lab would be very useful for me.
m48+ emulates almost all the major HP calculators: priceless.

Insert long list of iPhone apps that would be extremely useful for me to have quick access to on the go.
Something big enough to comfortable get through my RSS feeds (and read comments) on the go, but small enough to tote around. General internet use also of course.
Battery life: it has to get me through at least a full day without charging.
Most of all, it has to be thin and easy to take around. And you know what, for a few hundred dollars, I want it to be sleek and pretty and well designed. At $500-800 eyesores are pretty disappointing. Solid, sleek, thin, portable: a.k.a. unibody alumnium/anything apple will probably be the best here.
I could keep going but I'm getting tired of typing.
Just for the record though: the common criticism.
Front-facing camera: I have no use. I've never used video chat and don't plan on it any time soon. I could have a discussion on why I think it's a worse form of communication than text or voice but I won't bother here.
Back-facing camera: I rarely take pictures. I leave that to my girlfriend's point and shoot. Otherwise, I'll use my phone. I'm not holding up a tablet to snap a picture.
Multitasking: I don't use internet radio or any third party apps that NEED background running. For app switching, all multitasking solutions require two actions: one to bring up the list, one to choose something. On iPhone OS, you press home to see the list, and click to choose. As long as it is snappy (which it seems) and everything saves its state (which they do) then there wouldn't be much if any difference to me or anyone in terms of app switching. Furthermore, if its an issue, I'll probably be jailbreaking it anyway and I'll just throw Pro Switcher on it. Besides, it'll probably show up in 4.0.
Flash: Touche. I don't use it enough that it is a game breaker, but it is definitely an annoyance. I'm interested to see how this plays out though.
I know I missed a lot of benefits it has for me, but I just wanted to illustrate a point. The iPad is actually a win for some people. Oh and let's not get started on the non-techy market.

Great post. I don't know why people can't just let other people spend their money on what want to. Does someone owning an iPad somehow make the life of a Windows or Android fan worse? Does someone passing up on the iPad hurt the feelings of someone who wants one? I will not be getting an iPad because I don't want one. If I did want one, I'd get it. I know that concept is hard for some people to grasp, but that's the way normal people work.
