I'm speaking about the US market in general, and our shallow analysis of mobile software platforms. We always act like the British are stupid and quirky when it comes to mobile tech, and themrest of thr globe along with them. There's so much inexperience in analysing an OS and a device its stupid.

I've never seen where any technology was rated higher than another that is favored everywhere but the US, has far more thorough feature set able to replicate the other devices feature for feature while boasting a plethora of features nothing can match, but dismiss it, even call it irrelevant, in the face of the competition because its better looking.

Imagine if the BMW M3 GTR came out with a square steering wheel, and was pitted against a Honda Civic Si with a normal Momo racing wheel. Driving the Honda would be easier, but the M3 would be faster regardless. Does the more elegant driving interface change the fact its still better on the racetrack?

Smartphones are utilities, appliances that perform functions. The one with the most utility wins in my book, and sets the bar for the rest. All of today's smartphones are merely meeting the bar set by Nokia's N95 3 years ago. Looking better than another while still not meeting Nokia's 2007 standard doesn't make something technically superior, though it may fit a personal choice. Aside from the UI, or the software steering wheel, the underlying OS is indeed a marvel.

Don't take offense. I've spent alot of years studying smartphones and OSes, and I know the UI is important to inexperienced users, but not as much to more tech savvy users. While we look at UI, and think Blackberries and WebOS are the business, I look at the app runtimes, graphics frameworks, shared ecosystem toolkits, etc., and see more clearly which OS is more capable.

When someone says Android vs. Symbian, I see C++ and Java/Dalvik frameworks with OS controlled task management vs. C++, Java, Python, Flash, Ruby, Mscript, Silverlight, full task management with enhanced 3rd party options and full open source fo better access to integrate features instead of run them atop the OS. Technically, its a much more advanced beast, capable of running code from desktop OSes (Qt, Python, Flash, etc., run on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix), smartphones (Silverlight and Qt run on WinMo), and more. Just because its wearing a loud shirt doesn't mean much when it comes performance time.

You can like what you like. But you'll have to admit the reason our market differs is we're less advanced technically, and the UI has a major effect on our device experiences. In Europe and Asia, people pick up a Symbian device with no issue because they are used to such advanced tech. Most young US kids found the N95 easy to use, but not the older neophytes. We're focused on body work and steering wheels instead of motors and transmissions. Anyone buying a car with these criteria usually fair badly in the long run.

BTW, its christexaport, not Mr. Smartphone. I've passed the smartphone era, and graduated to a pocket workstation. N900, baby! Symbian is for smartphones, and I no longer use them. But if I do, its Symbian only, with Android as a last option. If you want to learn more, feel free to read my many posts on Symbian-Freak and Maemo-Freak, PhoneReport, Maemo.org, and MeeGo.com. I'm sure there's plenty of work in the 4 years I've spent reviewing and analysing this market and its products.

Don't you find it weird that all the countries that are mobile savvy and more advanced than us prefer what we think is worthless? There must be something our lagging market is overlooking. You'll find out pretty quick once you gain more experience. I'm American, too, and was a WinMo user until I got into Symbian. I learned years ago.

christexaport

Comments on Sygic Mobile Maps for Nokia N900 brings turn-by-turn to Maemo

@christexaport
Of course your argument falls apart when confronted with devices like the Nexus One, a phone with a 1GHz CPU and almost twice the RAM of the N900.

There isn't anything all that wrong with Symbian (or Maemo); it's just Nokia's *implementation* of both OS' that is a huge mess. It is Nokia who has been releasing devices with hardware specs from 2007, even today, and declaring them 'flagships'. In fact, the N95 was MORE powerful than current Nokia devices; it contained graphics acceleration, whereas today's phones from Espoo don't, aside from the N900.

Most Europeans will tell you that the best Symbian phone on the market isn't made by Nokia. Europewas 5 years ahead of us on mobies and smartphones. Now that we've closed the gap and gotten to see firsthand what they've been doing for years, we still have issues with accepting that Europe can teach us alot about mobiles. We can't just open up to those markets and study why they choose Symbian over everything else, and accept that as our market matures, Symbian will offer something superior that the competition can't offer. We always have this attitude that we're better and they have some foreign way of thinking. The U.S. market, in terms of handset depth, is still no where near as mature as european markets, although we are growing. However, with the rapid influx of dumb downed smartphones (i.e. iphone), this development is coming a bit slowly. We still have quite a ways to go.

lockstocked

Comments on Sygic Mobile Maps for Nokia N900 brings turn-by-turn to Maemo

@tonicboy
sorry, but I'm not you father. Especially since Nokia gave free ovi maps to all S60, gave us a mediocre update, and then said, "oh we're focusing everything on Maemo 6 from now on" with zero clue if Maemo 6 or "MEEEEEEEGO" will even run on our top-of-the-line hardware that I actually paid a decent amount of money for.

It's a JOKE.

N900 and Maemo 5 look GREAT on paper, but the deployment WAS A COMPLETE FRIGGIN JOKE.

Here's another rundown of how much of a joke it is--

Ovi store launches. There have been no real apps introduced to it AT ALL since the launch titles. They added Firefox. Which was available FOR FREE nearly 3 weeks before appearing in Ovi. The real kicker here is that a few paid apps showed up--- Okay they weren't even apps, they were MMS message templates. THE N900 DOES NOT EVEN DO MMS.

So I'm with Johnny Rockerts-- except I WISH i had bought another phone.
