They also have a pretty weak 3G footprint over America that doesn't cover too much more than Sprint's 4G network [which also has some pretty big backers for more deployment: Comcast, Time Warner, Sprint, Intel, Google, Brighthouse, etc.]. And T-Mobile can't brand it a 4G network because IT'S NOT a 4G network. They are just trying to stay relevant in a time when they are becoming irrelevant. They released the HTC HD2 the same week that other carriers are gearing up to bring better HTC HD2-like devices and think that it will be hot and then they bring it out on the smallest network in terms of mobile broadband. The only thing T-Mobile has going for them is good customer service and great plan prices. And they definitely don't have Windows Phone 7 going for them [not on the HD2 at least].

Corey

Comments on T-Mobile USA reiterates that 'breadth' of 3G footprint will get HSPA+ this year

@Jelc its still 3g. yeah it has speed potential, but given T-mobiles small footprint, they'll have little room to move. 3g networks are already crowded as it is...

Trup1aya

Comments on T-Mobile USA reiterates that 'breadth' of 3G footprint will get HSPA+ this year

T-Mobile, I've spent this entire afternoon excited about a wonderful phone. What we're paying for is speed, and 4G isn't a speed. Its a label given to a next gen protocol and equipment flavor. But what you may not get is that there are 3G network technologies that surpass current WiMax speeds, so the 3G at TMobile will be close to the same speed, only at a lower cost.

TMobile is wise to do this, providing 4G quality speeds at little cost to deploy. They will wait for the 4G technologies to mature and ramp up speeds, as well as for the cost of equipment to lower, before investing into a nascent technology.
