On the N95 and N96 it was amazing, the ability to add apps easily and its wide support to things such as Opera Mini etc, but on the N97 it was the biggest failure. I got the phone 1 month from when it came out, and it took the good part of a year to release basic things such as kinetic scrolling and bug fixes. I have had a new, and their phones always have been durable and quality made. I really want another. But in regards to high end phones (which are now becoming the norm)...

Their 'flagship' N900 was 3yrs too late, and its form factor still looked like a brick, even compared to the similar Droid.

Then Nokia decides to keep it unsubsidized at $500+. On top of this all, the only provider it can use 3G in the US is TMobile. Tmobile is the only carrier who gives breaks to unsubsidizes phones, yet are the weakest US carrier in terms of coverage (by far). Not exactly streamlining your business tactics.

I understand the want to keep the hardware and software streamlined under the Nokia banner, but these days you need hardware, software, AND carrier support.

1) give your phones 3G frequencies on BOTH American GSM carriers.
2) improve the form factor of your $500+ flagship phones.
3) Symbian is laggy. Decide on Maemo/Memo or whatever you call it, or Symbian, or stick to hardware and adopt Android
4) Decide if you want to align with US carriers. If this means makeing CDMA phones, then DO IT!!!!

I mean HTC and Apple both can manage to dole out phones that are sexy, can slip in my pocket without looking like I have a brick in there, have US GSM 3G bands, have their own slick UI's. All this while being supported by US carriers at reasonable prices. They understand the US market is not based upon unsubsidized phones.

Mr Bojangles

Comments on Nokia N8 being announced mid-April

@Mr Bojangles
The N900 was never intended as a consumer device, hence the no-fluff design, unsubsidized and UI quirks. Carriers that carry a brand do. Nokia didnt play nice with them for a while, and thats the reason they have no significant presence in the US now. On your points:

1) Makes sense
2) A matter of taste. I prefer QWERTY, but a touchscreen only device like this one has its merits and should be shaped properly.
3) Symbian is the best OS out there IMHO, its UI is dated and wasnt built for touch however. Judging from what I see at the Symbian Foundation, Symbian^3 will be on par with the competition, Symbian^4 will jump the competition. MeeGo will be for the extreme high end.
4) I think they will. I hope they do.

JFH

Comments on Nokia N8 being announced mid-April

To be sold 6 months later for $799 and full of bugs.

Nexus Three will be played out by then.
