I used DroidMod 1.0 and am really happy with it. Been rooted since day one and I have been running 2.1, OC'd to 800 Mhz, multi-touch, tethering, etc... Screw VZW and do it yourself. It honestly takes maybe an hour if you are computer illiterate.  I am running Smoked Glass 6.0.1 with the processor overclocked to 1.1ghz.
