If any piece of the install fails, it leaves the app in a very bad state, usually requiring a full installer to fix anyhow. You also have to either calculate delta updates for a few revisions back and distribute different updates to people at 9.0.3, 9.0.2, 9.0.1 and so on, or just force people older then X versions to download the full file.

Apple used to do delta updates for things like the iPhone firmware and such, until a number of devices were bricked when it failed, or other quirks that occurred when it seemed to work, but then failed to update one important file somewhere. Sure, the process could have been hardened, but it's a lot of engineering effort just to save some bits from going across the internet.

On Windows, I'm also not aware of a way to delta update the MSI side easily. I personally can't stand the fact that Adobe ONLY offers delta updates for many of its products, which is made even more problematic by the fact that Adobe has to update its products so frequently (think Acrobat), which means that in order to get a fully patched installation of Acrobat 9 Pro, I have to download something like 8 different updaters. Yes, companies could produce delta and full update versions, but that's more work, and if they're only going to support one or the other, I for one am glad they are only offering full updaters. They're more reliable, and honestly downloading a huge package once and storing it is less annoying than downloading 15 mini-updates one after the other.

John

Comments on

@brookey86 It prevents any "patching" issues. better to download a whole new application than a patch that possible have a higher chance of f'ing up your Library

chookalana

Comments on

@Hooch
She's a whore. but you can't stop going back to her, right?

daytripper

Comments on

@NoToApple Thanks for the MSI info. My knowledge of MSI is a bit rusty these days.

Microsoft updates have their own issues though. Most do indeed just contain the full DLLs or whatever being updated, and I'm really getting tired of the ones that leave folders around like C:\gfds7gfds8hjkhr43kj, along with full rollback executables tucked alongside rollback data in c:\Windows.
