I setup the VM to be able to access the raw disks so I didn't have to first create a volume and then a vmdk over it, plus it is better just to let the NAS based OS to handle everything at the hardware level. I am currently playing around with ZFS as it has a few bonuses over RAID that I like, one being that it is much easier to grow a volume and second is that it is less error prone on a power failure. I added a Synology 4-bay NAS over the winter, and it was a much better solution than building a PC to do it in my case. Install a couple of drives, plug in Ethernet, turn it on and it's ready to go. Quieter, takes less power, has built in features (DLNA server, backup software, remote backup to cloud data storage, remote access) ready to go, and all I had to do was create a couple of accounts on it. If you would rather build your own system, that's fine, but lots of people would like to just pick something up, throw it in the closet (or somewhere out of sight), and have it work.

When I install something for my dad this year (who's not really technically inclined at all), I'm going to do something similar, since there's no way he could manage to keep a PC running as a NAS full time, but something that he can plug in and forget about? That's worth the extra, and had this Drobo been out when I bought mine, I would have gone for it most likely (the plug-in programs are nice).

ChrisH

Comments on Drobo FS: finally, Data Robotics releases a Drobo NAS drive

@MikeTV
Exactly, you could spend less on a pc and spend time setting it up, dealing with hardware issues and faults.
