The money from netbook sales represents a much lower profit margin that goes to numerous companies and manufacturers. Apple makes money not only on iPad sales but from iPad app sales, e-book sales, etc. So even if the iPad doesn't sell as well as the iPhone on release, Apple still can bank on the fact that the iPad apps are relatively more expensive than iPhone apps.

So I'm not arguing with you in your comparison with netbook sales. But that doesn't mean that Apple isn't going to sell quite a lot of iPads over time (there will be another spike in the fall, when school starts up and the multitasking OS upgrade hits the iPad. Also several news sites (non-tech sites) reported that they called Best Buys all over the country and didn't find any that weren't sold out on Saturday. So the ones you would find in a store today are from the restocking shipments which are supposed to arrive a couple times a week as production ramps up.

Then there is the fact that Apple never predicted any number of sales at all, just that it would be a hit, which it certainly is.

And then to compare a five day sales total for the iPad (a single product from a single company) to 365 days of sales of what? 30+ products (netbook computer from every single computer maker there is besides Apple) like it has some meaning.

Are you implying that Apple didn't sell $12 billion in the first week like it is some kind of failure? You do realize that if Apple had $12 billion in sales the first week that all the other PC makers in the world would pretty much shut their doors now and get it over with.

Oh and I'm glad that netbook computers have received ZERO media attention in your mind, but the truth is they have received more media attention than any other computing platform for the past two years running with the exception of Apple products. Thousands of stories about netbook computers and their sales, reviews product announcements and so forth have graced the pages of all the tech sites for two years now. So anyone saying they get no media time is pretty much full of it.

And BTW I am a Windows 7 user all the way, SLi gaming rig desktop Dell laptop and Acer netbook as my personal computers atm. It's funny when a mediocre Apple release still blows away the competition and the haters don't realize that. They've become so used of Apple's success that when they don't hit it out of the park they feel the need prance around. That depends on who you ask. iHaters say it's a failure. iLovers say it's a success. Only Apple can gauge that based on what Apple's iPad sales goals were. If the iPad has sales far greater than any other tablet built, it would have to be deemed somewhat of a success. If Apple sells enough iPads to significantly raise it's revenue it would have to be considered a success.

Really, a week's sales is too soon to be judging success or failure especially since the 3G version isn't yet available. So far, the WiFi is only half the iPad product line. Maybe the 3G is is the version that consumers really want and current sales wouldn't reflect that.]]>Apr 8th 2010 10:14PM
