Is WebOS really that great? Now the app market is going to be so damn fragmented .. WebOS, Android, iPhone OS, Windows Phone, Symbian etc. Oh yeah and freakin' Blackberries too.

Forget it .. I hope Palm makes all its patents public domain, then sells its employees to google and HTC .. and the WebOS platform dies.

It won't happen, but thats the best thing from a consumer standpoint.

HTC isnt a large enough company to build devices for three different operating systems. Unless they make there devices internationally launched and capable of doing all three OS's. it's hard to deny, WebOS is simply beautiful, and when I say beautiful I mean "the hot girl you wanna bang in the crowd, next to the pretty girl you'd like to settle with"

HTC, pushing the great hardware that it does, needs a OS that it can call its own. Windows Phone 7 just won't deliver that much for HTC. I'm not saying it's not a great OS, but like Android, it'll be pushed over many different variations of hardware. We've already seen an LG and Samsung phone for WP7, so like android I'm sure we can see "fragmentation" just like all the different versions of WinMo over X amount of hardware.

HTC, if you do buy Palm, please make it your "HOME" OS, i'm not saying taht x android device or x WP7 device will suck, i'm just saying that you're at a stage where you're doing great, pushing sales, and people are starting to recognize. As great as your entire SENSE project is, it's still being crossed over on two platforms, and you need something to call your own.

WebOS is a winner in my opinion, but don't get me wrong Android will always win my hear over.

If that happens, I'll shed shitloads of tears. Some of us happen to not want iPhones, and the WebOS platform would be DOA. Apple would control Palm's patents and become sue happy(ier?), and innovations would be stifled and replaced with minimalist improvements.

But I like choice too. While I love the idea of Android, with all this fragmentation I am not so confident about where it is going, and wherever this it is not there yet (it definitely has its place though).

Why not Motorola ?
Motorola doesn't have its own smart OS.
Android apps can easily be re-written(converted/supported) on WebOS without a lot of pain(LINUX platform)
HTC makes good hardware, but not reliable. Did you buy one. Use it for couple of weeks and you will regret.

Actually yes .. variety can screw the consumer if there is too much of it. Stuff becomes commodity and there is little capital investment. That's why things like cement haven't been improved upon in I don't know how many decades. Why do you think there isn't major research on battery tech taking place? Technology makes huge leaps when the market is limited to about 3 players .. only then are capital outlays made to invest in large projects.

Also, from an app developer standpoint the only way to reach all the smart phone users will be to develop to multiple platforms .. if there are only two or three players, it becomes easier to invest in making a kick ass app instead of having to port, test, and support it on multiple platforms. App developers can make more money .. more money = more investment and better apps.

As a gift, they can issue a WebOS update that once again sync customers with iTunes. Then they can take WebOS out behind the shed and put it down like old yeller, before incorporating many of its innovations into iPhone OS.
