They've changed their approach to add ons. The android devices aren't going to be like the previous Linux ones. There's a workaround to get the Android Marketplace installed though.

And actually most of the generations had very good codec support compared to other media players. Even this generations Archos 5/7.

Audio codec support:

* FLAC up to 1000kbs @44hz
* WMA, Protected WMA, WAV (PCM/ADPCM)
* AAC (except protected content) - available as a free plugin

* with paid plugin: AC3 stereo audio and 5.1 sound files (via SPDIF output of DVR Station)

Video codec support

The Archos Media Center (AMC) is capable of decoding the following codecs:

* MPEG-4 HD (up to 720p)
* MPEG-48 (ASP@L5 AVI, up to DVD resolution)
* H.264 HD (up to 720p) - available as a free plugin
* WMV (MP@ML, up to DVD resolution) including WMV protected files (note: older WMV7 and WMV8 are not supported)
* MKV (up to 720p, 2500kbs, 23fps)
* Motion JPEG in Quarter VGA resolution
* with paid plugin: MPEG-2, WMV HD (720p), VOB


So 2 paid plugin's for codec's you won't really need. There isn't much HD WMV's out there, nor VOB's. Especially in terms of Android, I like having the extra options. Let the consumers get their hardware and form factor size point to their liking. In the past Archos had been criticized for having set too high a price and included too many features, then they started to cut out things like codec support to keep the entry cost down. I think they will still focus on keeping costs down by nickel and diming where possible, but I like the idea that people can get in at an even lower price point and possibly get things included/excluded such as: 3G (replace phone? or just a mid), larger HD, smaller/larger screen (problem to some people for one of the close, but not quite direct competitor of the mini 5), etc.

5": Competitor to Dell Streak.
7": More baggable version of iPad.
10": iPad size.

I guess different processors, memory allow for multiple versions of 3 & 7, maybe even 3" with phone. Android doesn't compete software wise with mobile OSX (yet), so be interesting to see what Archos can add to make this competitive. But I guess with those stated prices they already have one major advantage.
