That way the wires act as protection for the core and can carry power (Sure, if you bent a small 180 with it, it'd snap, but it would afford some protection that raw fiber doesn't have). Two birds with one stone. I also wonder if polymer fiber would be useful here, in so much that raw throughput isn't as much of a concern as durability.

Now, what would be cool, is if they could re-use the USB3 connector, and simply put the optical link in the middle (the plastic part that sticks out). That way it'd be backwards compatible on either end, but would support the higher speed if both ends are LightPeak enabled. So you'd buy a hard drive that would support USB, USB2, USB3 and Light Peak depending on the cable and computer you plugged it into with only one socket...

ircmaxell

Comments on Intel says Light Peak coming next year, can and will coexist with USB 3.0

@Jacob1

Well you can't charge devices with light, so unless the fiber optic cables still have some copper strands to conduct electricity, charging may be a no-go.

John

Comments on Intel says Light Peak coming next year, can and will coexist with USB 3.0

@Jacob1

Yeah if they want to be "the last cable you'll ever need" they had better also have an electrical conductor.
