The fact that it doesn't seems to be ignorant. Touch mode needs to have a touch-friendly desktop, task-bar, menu-buttons. The reason why Apple's "touch" interface has been so successful is because it is perfectly designed for fingers. The OS must be designed with the device in mind. What if you had to control the OS with your elbow, do you think that just because its a point device, the OS shouldn't need to design around it. If you want to try and use your finger as a pointing device in Windows 7 running Adobe Photoshop (with a higher resolution than 1280x800), be my guest. Who said anything about fingers? Ain't no way in hell you're gonna do digital art on Windows 7 with your finger. I was talking about styli. That's what you would use on stuff like Photoshop.

Apple's iPhone OS interface shouldn't even be compared to Windows 7. Don't you think that's a little unfair? One's met with consumption mainly in mind and the other is for work, with play on the side. One is light and the other is heavy. One doesn't true support stylus input or pressure sensitivity digitizers, the other does They're on different hardware architecture for crying out loud.

I really find it odd it when anyone says that Windows 7 is better than OS3/4 or vice-versa. Everything else is totally different.

Besides, I already believe that if you're not gonna be doing stylus work like digital art, and note-taking (OneNote) you shouldn't be using a touchscreen version of 7.

You should be comparing OS3/4 to WP7, that's a fair comparison to me, and aptly right to say Apple's touchscreen OS is ahead of MS.

But I don't think MS is not gonna rework their entire OS so some people can dick around with maps and a web browser. There is a right click multitouch gesture built in. Gestures for copy, paste, and any custom action you want to perform. Finger panning and momentum scrolls built enabled throughout the OS... I could go on and on.

I mean, Microsoft is still ahead of Apple in some areas. But of course apple is 2 years ahead, that if they did have a full touchscreen OSX, lets not forget that iphone OS does not equal OSX. Dork! Not even mentioning that if you wanna compare the iphone OS with windows phone 7 OS which I'm pretty sure there isn't even a fair comparison since WP7 kicks iphone OS ass even in the beta stage.

trashoner

Comments on Microsoft releases Windows 7 Touch Pack as a free download

@trashoner My primary machine runs Windows 7. I think it's the best OS out there. But I'm not talking about the OS in totality, I'm talking about the "touch user interface". I've tested Win7 with touch-enabled. And all the bells and whistles are great, zoom in, gestures, flicks of jumplists, but the application design has remained static. Every application I know has tiny buttons and tiny widgets all over the place. Scroll bars are still there, File menu is still there. Come on. Make a new SDK that is designed (UI elements) around touching with your finger. Put a stamp on each application that says "Touch Approved" for all I care. Differentiate them. A touch application should differentiate itself from a mouse driven application to be successful. Otherwise, your back to Windows Mobile 6 with a task manager and a real OS.

ryeguy_24

Comments on Microsoft releases Windows 7 Touch Pack as a free download

"touch... pack"

uh-heh-heh-heh
heh-heh-heh

shishi

Comments on Microsoft releases Windows 7 Touch Pack as a free download

@shishi

Be glad that it's not "touch package"

TomTom2007

Comments on Microsoft releases Windows 7 Touch Pack as a free download

Will this finally put an end to the incessant "OMG Windows 7 is not a good touchscreen OS" whining?

whiskers

Comments on Microsoft releases Windows 7 Touch Pack as a free download

Only for Multi-touch devices... This is an app that everybody has been wanting MS to release non OEM, since previously it was only available with the purchase of a new PC. The thing is, this thing only runs on a machine with a Primary Multi-touch monitor. So it is only good for people who have bought a Tablet in the past few months (ones that likely came with Win7 and the touch pack pre-installed) or for the few people who have bought a standalone Multi-touch monitor and are using it as their primary display.

Seems like this app will go over great for the 10 or so people who can use it. Now if they made a version that worked with all those old resistive tablets out there, I could see it peaking some interest.

RandomGuy

Comments on Microsoft releases Windows 7 Touch Pack as a free download

@RandomGuy \

Multi touch PCs and laptops have been available since 2008.
