To display all visible colors requires so called "imaginary" primaries that exist outside of the spectrum of human vision. The rec 709 (HD) spec has a gamut much smaller than human vision. Even if the spec were expanded you would be limited by the quality and purity of your phosphors. Adding a fourth phosphor is an easy (if expensive) way to extend the reproducible gamut.

As the original poster said though, this is problematic because all content made for TV is either scanned RGB or shot digitally (bayer RGB). Watching this content on an extended gamut display will distort the original colors probably for the worse.

Increasing bit count simply slices the display gamut into finer pieces. Bit count =/= color gamut.

Weet

Comments on Sharp's four-color HDTV, Samsung's cheapest 3DTV now on sale

How about some more content before I jump into the 3d realm...

Slick

Comments on Sharp's four-color HDTV, Samsung's cheapest 3DTV now on sale

@slick612nkz Not more, better

Hans Wurst

Comments on Sharp's four-color HDTV, Samsung's cheapest 3DTV now on sale

@slick612nkz
Chicken and egg.

Swackhammer1

Comments on Sharp's four-color HDTV, Samsung's cheapest 3DTV now on sale

lame.

paul

Comments on Sharp's four-color HDTV, Samsung's cheapest 3DTV now on sale

here's the latest of review sharp's quadpixel

http://www.marketnews.ca/Hands-onReviews/Hands-onReview:SharpQuattronLC-40LE810UNFour-ColourLCDHDTV.html

i'm impressed; The distance to the screen from where I sit in bed is roughly 10'. Forum people keep telling me to get a 42" TV, but I honestly think it look way too big in my room plus be too big in general. For a while I was thinking 32" would be perfect, but now I'm thinking 37" might be best (I watch a lot of widescreen films on a SD DVD player) along with some sports, SD and HD shows.

They don't make 37" plasmas anymore, so I'm debating between conventional LCD vs. LED. I know all about full array with local dimming vs edge lit regarding LED's. The TV is going on a stand so the thin profile of an edge lit LED doesn't matter to me. I've also read a lot of bad things about edge lit LED's (specifically that their picture isn't much better than a conventional LCD and that the edge lighting isn't so great, especially compared to backlit LED's with local dimming).

At the 37" level I'm pretty much forced to go conventional LCD (which I think I'm okay with). I tend to lean towards Sony and Panasonic when it comes to TV brands.

Anyways, some suggestions would be really appreciated (models, etc). Also, what does everybody think about edge lit LED's vs. a really nice conventional LCD with the same size screen, 1080P, etc? Lastly, I might be open to going 40" if someone can make the case for LED and suggest a model. Or even a conventional LCD at 40" if you swear by it.

My budget is $800 max, ideal in the $450 - $650 range. Thanks!!!!!

blair harrington

Comments on Sharp's four-color HDTV, Samsung's cheapest 3DTV now on sale

@blairy

For those prices, you're locked into traditional LCD really.
