I would tend to agree with you. The proprietary software on all these internet TV's is slow with very limited functionality. For this to work it has to be faster, easier to use, and upgradeable. Otherwise why bother, keep the TV a stupid monitor and use a separate box for the brains.

I agree completely with you last sentence, I think some basic functions should be in there, but bringing a whole OS such as Android to it seems silly. Entertainment and media is becoming fragmented, while I agree with having choices it just doesn't always fit and some things are becoming overdone.

I think companies such as Sony need to have an aim for a certain set-up for the average consumer living room and then branch out from there with a few interchangeable options and ideas based around other rooms, a Display, a Hub, and an internet connection with a wireless router. Plus the option of a surround sound system or av receiver + speakers.

Choice is great, but the sheer amount of choice and fragmentation seems to offset its benefits, for Sony as a company, for an average consumer or for a casual consumer, the only people who benefit is the hardcore; which is good for me, but I care about everyone else too.

You know I originally thought the exact same thing....but I think to really get adoption from the masses is to integrating it into TVs. The key here is that:

1) You can turn-off the integrated solution
2) External solutions are available for bleeding edge adopters

Some people will always just want to pay extra to get everything in a box even if it has more inherent weaknesses (though some times the consumer is ignorant to them) than strengths.
