After all, they are far more similar, being based largely on the same widget engine, and provide the same functions of glanceable data and neither are really suitable/intended for movie viewing et al. The Chumby One is excellent as a not-entirely-well-defined souped-up radio alarm clock, and makes a lot more sense (or has a better purpose) than the Dash's current incarnation.

Pratik

Comments on Sony Dash review

@meeku Yeah, a comparison to Sony's version of the Chumby makes more sense given that it's meant to be stationary too and priced at a similar price point than a portable iPad.

trunksy

Comments on Sony Dash review

@meeku I do agree that the Chumby devices share more similarities. I figure the iPad has more buzz going on and means more to many people, even if many readers here have plenty of background knowledge on the Chumbies. As for the DreamScreen, surely they could've brought in the Chumby, but maybe they wanted to give the Dash a "big (overstatement) win" and put it appropriately in the middle of two devices... I dunno.

juanvaldez

Comments on Sony Dash review

@meeku I thought about making a more overt comparison to the Chumby, but the fact is the Dash is much more functional than either Chumby, and targeted at a very different market. The Chumby is a hacker toy, the Dash is a mass-market smart alarm clock -- it felt more natural to put it in that context.

Nilay Patel

Comments on Sony Dash review

I could see technology impaired people like my Mom enjoying this. It's a digital photo frame, only with 1,000 more uses, and seems very simple to operate. This would go great on a kitchen counter to listen to music, or use some of the social apps to take a quick peep on what's going on. This definitely is made to go on a nightstand as a way to check the weather when waking up, or listen to a little Pandora before falling asleep. If navigating between widgets is slow I could see that being an annoyance, but it sounds like it works well enough for that not to be a problem.

Dan

Comments on Sony Dash review

OMG Rockin robin playing in the video I love the J5

MoonWalkerCTE
