There are basically NO changes in the OS whatsoever.
They did not even fix the max resolution which is still limited to 640x360, which is downright EMBARASSING considering the next iphone will have almost double that! Yes, if it would, its battery would be dead in half the time, would run extremely slow (since it is a VM) and it would lose parts of its functionality. No thanks. No, no, NO! Look, I like Android but it has its own share of issues.

Which brings me on this rant:

Some people are moaning about a UI they've never been used but, really, what are they moaning about specifically? Symbian^1 has three things it needs to sort out:

1) Consistency of touch - no one/two click ambiguity.
2) Removal of annoying network connection messages.
3) Simplification of menu structure, particularly in the settings menu.

And... that's it.

Now, to my understanding, Symbian^3 does all this so why the immediate hate from people who haven't used it (I appreciate Eldar has, even if it's an early version, but reading his 'preview' it seems that his biggest bitch was it's evolutionary, not revolutionary - which we all knew it was going to be)?

And furthermore, if a UI gives one touch access to a feature, whether that's contacts, music, teh intarwebs, applications then isn't it, you know, actually good enough? So I guess it boils down to this - do you want a phone that has a slightly - and I mean slightly - better UI or do you want one that, say, gives you free sat nav and a better camera?

And that's the deal - I personally don't give a f**k if a phone has a slightly smoother transition screen than another if it doesn't let me know where the hell I am or can't take drunken pictures of my mates at night. Yeah, the free sat nav that comes with a Nokia device is awesome. I won't even consider an android device until Google Navigation is available all over Europe. The problem with Google's solution is that, as far as I know, requires a constant internet connection to work. That's fine if you're in your own country but pretty expensive if you're anywhere else.

For example, Vodafone give me unlimited web access in the UK as part of my contract but charge me up to £5 per day in continental Europe. This can make Google maps and expensive solution whereas with Ovi you just install the European map pack, set it to off-line (which it'll remind you to do) and off you go. You're right - the problem is the obscene amount of money the carriers charge for even a few meg. This is especially annoying since it's often the same carrier group as one's own provider (yes, I'm looking at you Voda IT and Voda ES).

I don't think it's that bad because all I care about is that pressing an icon that I clearly recognise as a music player actually takes me to the music player. Nokia can do more things, better built and so on... But the Android UI is much more attractive, it's much more cool and intuitive! Icons are much better designed. Symbian is a good platform, but the UI is outdated! Is Symbian^3 a great leap forward? NO! Do you think they are planning to improve in Symbian^4? From what is posted there I can see they those guys are planning to build another boring interface, it won't catch up with even modern Android or Web OS.

As for the people having a problem with Symbian interface - I'd like them to name one non-touch-screen smartphone with more intuitive interface yet with same features (interface/UX wise)... Yes, Symbian looks a bit dated and can use overhaul, especially on touchscreen devices, and Nokia is now doing exactly that so I don't see why the complaining - it's perfectly logical and simple, and once you get to know it even occasional quirks doesn't bother you...

No, like the C5-00 and C5-01 are different, the C5 then is a series, or a group, or different versions, whatever you want to call it.

Nokia camera phones have always started with N8. So N82, N86, Now N8. It is N series, and the N8x subseries, so to speak. Whereas N95 N97 are flagships devices. I would expect the same phone with Qwerty not to be the Flagship N9X series device. I wouldn't want to guess at what the N900's successor will be called. Putting the hack-happy Maemo of the N900 in the same product line as ostensibly user-friendly Symbian didn't do them any favours in the marketplace, so maybe it'll be punted over to the S Series.
