and thats just it. i played with one at a best buy on friday. definitely cool and flashy, but it stops there. i was pissed cuz i couldnt even post a damn comment on engadget! (the entire comments section refused to come up after 5 minutes... rest of the site loaded fine, though) typing was manageable in portrait, but still annoying and landscape......... i felt like a dog trying to play piano. maybe its just me, but ill stick with my netbook kthx.

Haven't used my mbp since getting the iPad, it's a better device for sofa surfing and email, and was better to take on vacation due to it's smaller size and excellent battery life.

Nice of you to make this assumption. Did you visit all 1,000,000 peoples' homes to figure this out?

All that really matters is that I have one, it is awesome, and I use it everyday....

I use it for these things:
- Remote Desktop connections to my 3 desktops
- Wireless touchpad and keyboard for my HTPC
- Typing a screenplay on the bus during the 2.5 hrs total ride to work
- Replying to idiots' comments on Engadget

1. Awesome user interface - You have to use it to understand how great it is.

2. Great design - Aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder, but the clean lines, high quality finish make it much more elegant than any netbook in this price range...

3. Price - The price of entry at $499 is very competitive when combined with the design and user interface.

4. Does few basic things very well - The web browser, the ebook reader, the itunes and app stores, the email client, the photo viewer and the media player on the ipad are easily better than any comparable notebook (forget netbook) that you can buy at any price. When compared to netbooks, you can also add in the portable gaming feature as another area where the ipad excels in.

For now, these features are helping it sell to an audience that does not care about an integrated physical keyboard or the flexibility of a regular notebook (netbook). Personally, I have a Sony Vaio X. It cost me $1399 - with 64GB SSD hard drive + 2GB RAM, but it's price alone would eliminate it from most people's consideration. Otherwise...

1. At 1.5lb it weighs the same as an ipad AND includes a keyboard
2. Has a higher resolution LED screen than the ipad
3. Has all the flexibility of a full OS - came with Windows 7 Pro.

Downside is...2-3 hour battery life and sluggish UI (compared to iPad).

If I had to pick between my Vaio X and iPad I'd take the Vaio X every time. Again, you have to use it to know how competent it is and in a world of trade offs, it works better for my taste....but if you look a the combination of features, design and price - the ipad is a formidable product. I'd go so far as to say it IS revolutionary. Doesn't mean it's for everyone, but it is for a LOT of people.
