It's an amazing tablet device no doubt, but it's just not practical for me and many other people to have to jailbreak it to use features that should be there in the first place. What's ridonkulous isn't what the iPad can't do - it's what people try to make it do thus defeating the whole purpose of such a device.

People, this is NOT a laptop computer. You can buy 16GB/32GB/64GB sizes. That's it.

Adding an external drive to do what exactly? I give credit to comex for the spirit jb but what I'd like to see instead of this kind of ludicrous setup is perhaps the option to use an external USB HD camera.

As far as shipped units, yes, you are right. But I also said "I would rather" so, given that phrase, I don't actually need an alternative to really be grammatically correct. Dump files from a camera.
Take all of your MP3's with you.
Take all of your still photos with you.
Take some of your home movies with you.
Take a respectable number of movies with you.

This thing is supposed to be a media player but has squat for storage and doesn't integrate well enough with the rest of the network to be an MCE/MythTV/FrontRow extender.

You don't need a macbook for that, when mobileterminal gets ported to the ipad (it doesn't work at the moment) you can do this directly from your device.

that said, I can see one reason for external storage support. backing up. it would be nice if I could plug in a thumb drive or such when I have the ipad with me on vacation (and no computer) and back up my stuff in case something happens to my ipad. then I would have copies of the photos I offloaded from my camera etc.
