I'd say gmail integration is about as good as it is on the iPhone/iPod touch. It isn't threaded, but it's useable. I never had a problem out of it, minus once when I was sending a serious amount of reply emails to someone I was working out a deal with for a new iPod touch. It is VERY usable. The problem you're having with the screen going black when you slide it is due to a loose battery cage. You can either jam a piece of paper between the battery and the top of the cage as a stopgap measure, or get in contact with Sprint and bitch your way into a replacement phone.

I'd have to agree with you about the new slowness of the camera app opening, mostly due to the new way apps open since WebOS 1.4. was released. Not much you can do there unless you want to roll back to 1.3.5. and lose video recording capabilities, along with other updated features.

If you really feel as though a Blackberry would suit your needs, go for it.
