To be 4G, a service must be able to obtain throughput of 100MB/s on the move with 1GB/s while stationary.  I believe Clear thinks that with the next revision to the standard, their WiMax products/networks will be able to obtain this while, in reality, it remains to be seen.  4G networks must be IP-based so scorpeo is on the right track with his/her comments. Verizon and At&T will deploy LTE at 700Mhz, the LTE Clear wants is LTE 2Ghz, which is compatible with Wimax via software. Wimax is not disappearing, in fact, Wimax is better for heavy video, data and online gaming. Wimax is more similar to an internet connection, LTE or more in line with a cell phone signal. The EVO is the first carrier device built for heavy video and data use. Sprint will be pushing video-chat and online gaming in their marketing of the EVO. I'd also like to add that LTE is a phone standard, while WiMAX will be used in a much wider variety of applications. Sprint/Clear has more bandwidth than LTE, and can handle more users. LTE has a higher range per tower, though. The uplink is indeed different. LTE uses SC-FDMA. You are correct WiMAX is similar to WiFi which uses OFDMA on both downlink and uplink. Both WiMAX and LTE have scalable bandwidth. Both use scheduling based on quality feedback from the devices. Both WiMAX and LTE can use MIMO to increase performance. Both anchor IP on a fixed gateway to help mobility. So I still think they are very similar. A lot of folks are obviously confusing the 2 LTE's. Once again, Verizon and At&t are rolling out LTE 700Mhz, which more similar to radio frequencies. Yes Wimax is similar to.... LTE Advanced, 2Ghz, Wimax is also 2Ghz. That is the LTE folks are talking about (although some do not realize it) when they say LTE and Wimax are similar.
