Also, the report makes it sound like Android is tops in share, when currently it is not. Just in sales (for what time period?). In a time when everyone and my 105 year old great grandmother 'knows' a new iphone is coming out and thus isn't buying, someone else having higher sales isn't shocking

This wouldn't be true if the iPhone was on more networks. I think the iPhone/Verizon rumours are gaining weight by these sort of statements. Lots of iPod touch owners only bought it because they couldn't use their network.

Also, you have to point out that there was a BOGOF on Android phones, and the 3GS is pretty dated (and, if that weren't enough, the iPhone 4G was exposed, obviously hurting sales).

Yes, there are extenuating circumstances. But in every case, you will find that it is Apple's fault.

Same as above. However, don't discount the people (like myself) who wished to buy the iPod Touch because they realized that they didn't want such a toy OS to be their cell phone. I want my cell phone open, and I couldn't care less about what happens to my media player/ entertainment unit. Apple's level of control is fine for that kind of machine, but for a phone it is unacceptable.

Apple changed the frame of the mobile OS' with the iPhone OS & took a big chunk of the market nice & early but Google came in strong with the Android OS & the fact that it's implemented in MANY devices clearly gives it an advantage.

The fact still remains, though, that NO ONE Android device has outsold ANY ONE iPhone OS device of the same year. That's due to the one thing that made Android OS sales greater than iPhone OS sales in the US, the diversity of choice with the Android platform.

Some may argue that's part of what makes Android so great, some may say it's an over saturated OS market. I agree with the latter. A proper statistical study with a sufficiently large, randomly selected sample will tell you a lot about the population within an arbitrary confidence interval.

That's because, unlike Apple, Google doesn't hold 100% control over the platform. You want to slap it on a tablet? Go right ahead. Pop it on your newest phone and put a skin to completely cover it up? Certainly!

The fact that Apple sells both the hardware and software has always become problematic in the later years. We saw this back in the 80s with the Apple home computers, and we're seeing it now in fast forward on the mobile market.

When forming a generalizing statement from data, one needs at least 30 volunteers (check) to make sure the data is normally distributed. Secondly, they have to be less than .05 of the total population (check). Then, you have a certain confidence level. I'm not saying Android hasn't sold more units or that this isn't a milestone for the platform, I'm just saying you can't take it as a public rejection of the iPhone.

Same goes for the Verizon thing. It'll come to Verizon at some point (maybe soon), and the iPhone could overtake Android again after that. Apple can really get momentum, and if they release a new iPhone on Verizon, they could really up their share with a massive launch. When the BOGOF sale ends, Android sales are also expected to really drop -- so take it with a grain of salt.

Except that they're adding over 90,000 apps in one month. This kind of growth indicates that eventually someone is going to make an app that does what you want it to do. though i dont really care, i love android much more, it just needs more developers for apps
though, at least they dont hold their app producers down :)
