It's actually a new trend. Everything (i.e. screen & body) used to be matte up until a couple years back. Lenovo (and IBM before that) were so stubborn in their placement of the CTRL key.

I don't understand how they thought putting the less used FN key on the outside corner (where 99% of other keyboards, notebook or desktop, put the CTRL key) was more useful.
