It's USB tethering (but then you're charging your phone, rather than draining it, so for one device, it works great), and the free version will do anything but https sites. The paid version will do anything, for a one-time $30 fee. I used the free PDAnet on both my G1 and Droid before I rooted them and put WiFi Tether on, and never had a problem.
