The word 'reading' is misleading, because case 'reading' is actually about reading and marking-up (highlighting, writing in notes...).

The Kindly may have highlighting capabilities, but without a touchscreen the process is too slow. Also, there is no capability to easily write notes into white space.

The iPad should be able to address the mark-up limitations of the Kindle. However, when the class is discussing a case, it needs to be incredibly fast/easy to navigate pages back and forth. I think the iPad will have trouble because its screen is too small to replace 8.5x11 case documents. Remember, when a case binder is open in front of someone, they are looking at Two 8.5x11 sheets at once. Spreading a single page over 2+ pages terribly complicates navigation. Anyone fumbling through iPad half-pages will be frustrated.

For an e-reader to fully replace paper cases it should also have a battery that can last a full day (though atypical, when its needed for 16 hours, that's the day when a battery failure is tragic), and (of course) causes no more eye strain than paper over 2 years of reading.

David

Comments on Kindle DX trial at Darden concludes it's academically woeful, personally enjoyable

@BadgerPosion Also forgot to mention - the multi-capabilities of the iPad is bad for use in class. Any device that can browse the internet or provide any distraction during case discussions is generally not allowed, by the majority of my professors at least. In theory students are in class to learn; in reality all students succumb to distractions if its easy to do so.
