If you still enjoy the phone you bought, why do you care what your neighbor is using? The argument doesn't even hold water if you consider the fact that it's simply the idea of a new smartphone coming out that moves all current smartphones, including iPhones, to the "old and busted" category. So purchasing an iPhone doesn't keep you from having the same issue. I don't think anyone I know who has a 3GS thinks its anything special since it's not even remotely the newest smartphone. As for complaining about updates and support, the Tmobile G1 can run 99% of the software on the Market. It still has a compass and GPS, so apps that require GPS support will still work on it and it runs the version of Android that most developers target(1.6). It's probably very similiar to an iPhone 2G. However, the allowed/physical functions on iPhones change from version to version creating Apple's own brand of fragmentation. I'm still wondering why that's conveniently forgotten every time someone talks about Android fragmentation. You can't avoid fragmentation, it's the nature of computers. An OS needs updates to justify it's release cycle, they get more powerful features, and hardware gets outdated. As for updates, Android users are spoiled. Sprint is getting the new updates to their phones, about annually. They have an issue with this because other Android phone owners are getting updates every 6 months. But, if you look at the rest of the industry(RIM, Apple, Windows), an annual update cycle is the norm. Apple iPhone users(i'm assuming you're one) shouldn't be using Sprint's yearly update cycle as an example of a company taking too long to update the OS, since you're currently on a one year update cycle yourself. The "iPhone 4G" will have outdated hardware within a month of its release, so those wanting to buy one will be stuck buying a phone that is outdated, much like 3GS customers now. Those wishing to buy an Android phone will have at least one state of the art device to choose from, no matter what time of year their upgrade rolls around.
When my new-every-2 came up on Verizon I bought the most advanced Android phone out at the time, the Droid. Am I a little jealous that there are faster Android phones that came out soon after I bought it? Of course! But my phone still runs every app just as well as when I bought it, so I guess it doesn't actually affect me at all! The new Android phones coming out and gaining market share will lead to more developers jumping to Android and adding to the already thriving market. The EVO 4G and whatever super-phone inevitably follows it a couple months later will only serve to up the Android game.
Just because Steve Jobs tells you that competition and cutting edge hardware being released every 2 months is a bad thing DOES NOT make it true!

marknichelson
