That's quite a feat, but given the small nature and limited real estate I have to wonder if the trade off is worth it. We're a healthcare company and make extensive use of tablets, so we need to know that what we're buying is quality and will last. Fujitsu is neither.

We previous owned fleets of T3000s and T4000s, and switched to Lenovo because of Fujitsu's terrible support. There were no on-site service options in our area and the machines are not user-serviceable. Small things like a broken keyboard required returning the laptop to Fujitsu. Repairs took weeks. On one occasion, Fujitsu lost one of our laptops in their service warehouse for three months; it showed up one day on our doorstep without so much as a "sorry."

We ordered a T900 to evaluate, because the larger 13-inch screen is attractive to staff with older eyes/poorer vision. It's the same story here: Poor quality. The casing is made of cheap, thin plastic that flexes and feels like it will break under the slightest duress. The machine is not user-serviceable at ALL; in opening the case, you disconnect a ribbon cable for the trackpad that cannot be reconnected because there is not enough slack; it's somehow connected at the factory using a special tool. Sounds bizarre, I know, but that's how it is.

And the pre-installed software: I pity the people who suffer with it. We image all our machines from a centralized server, but I booted the stock Windows install. After the 10-minute first-boot process started, the machine demands to run through a *60 minute* post-first-boot process to "finalize software installations." Only then can you actually use your computer.

For the outrageous (h/t to Engadget for "Rockefeller-esque") prices that Fujitsu charges, you can get a comparable tablet from almost any other Tablet PC vendor that will be better built, better performing, and better supported.

We've wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars on Fujitsu's tablets, and will not go near them again. Please learn from our experience and don't repeat the Fujitsu mistake.

Christian

Comments on Tablet PC shocker! People still buy laptops because that's what they're used to no matter how heavy or large they may be. I got to try a friends netbook and I was very impressed with it actually, but still it couldn't do what a full fledged laptop could do. Nice to have in a pinch, but not really practical for me. Smart phone - well I would love to have one but the prices of data plans and 3 year contracts up here North of the border suck to the point of being almost worthless. e-Readers/iPaq's - well its cute for what it does, but totally useless as a business tool. Maybe this will change with HPalm and WebOS...would be nice. Netbooks - well I always thought this form factor would be the winner - it has all the features I want and would use. So why has it failed to really kick some ass? In a few short reads up above me, I've read poor build quality, poor tech support, poor battery life, not user servicable (are any machines built with this in mind?). It would be really nice if a company would build a tablet that could compete on the cost front with traditional laptops. If that happened, I think traditional laptops would die pretty quickly.

chaosdivine

Comments on Tablet PC shocker! A prime example would be Christians comment (see above) who works in the healthcare industry. They get perfect use out of this. I can count on one hand how many times that screen was actually useful. But for a niche market it serves it's purpose.

Very similar to how tablets/slates (i.e. iPad) are niche in a way. It's not quite a laptop, but it's more than a smartphone (though I might beg to differ on that point), we'll say it's more than a Sony dash how about that? I agree with what you're saying. I do feel that if they decided to re-launch (re-market) tablets now a days that they'd be much more successful. People are finally "getting" touch-screen gesturing from their phones and have seen the CNN touch maps on TV, the interfaces in Avatar & Minority Report. Niche product or not, it comes down to breaking engrained thought patterns and educating the public on "other" ways to do things. If you can do that, while attaching a "coolness" factor to it like Apple does, then you're well on your way to RockStar status. I did see that the iPad has a slide in or bolt on keyboard at some point. If they could do the same thing with a tablet somehow and allow you to detach the device, while having some kind of battery life and built in mini-OS then I think they'd have a winner. Instead of all these companies trying to re-invent the wheel and/or copy Apple, just take a look at their existing products and refine the hell out of them. Remember that Lenovo LePhone design? I think if you did that with a tablet, iPad cross, you'd really make some coin.

chaosdivine

Comments on Tablet PC shocker! I owned a T4000, T4010 and T4210. The latter is still working so far, the other two died with burned down internal PSU units (grilling everything including the HD).
The reason why I bought my first Lifebook was the option to replace the main battery while putting it on S3/sleep (there was a little internal battery sized like a $.25 US coin which could holdup for 2 minutes).
Unfortunately the case is for bad quality and all three models had cracks after a while between the keyboard and the left/right case edge.
Also the batterypack mount was/is of poor quality and only locked with plastic latches out of which rendered two of my batterypacks useless because the latches broke off.
Worst case was that one batterypack dropped out while I was carrying the laptop back from a meeting turning power off loosing data.
I liked so far the screen swivel which works in both directions but unfortunately lacks a lock hence if you are in a hurry and grab the laptop on the top of the screen the bottom starts to swivel uncontrolled.
From the pictures on the US Fujitsu Shop Website I cannot determine if those issues have been addressed on this new model but I am very reluctant to buy a Lifebook again.
Oh, did I mention that in 2008 I switched to a 13' MacBook Unibody? No more cheap plastic and poor batterypack mount (I own the last model with user replacable battery) and the color of the screen is way better too.
The old Lifebook T4210 (bought in 2007) is still around but I haven't turned it on for a long time. Maybe I am putting it up on eBay but I suspect it wouldn't get me much with the cracked case.
Conclusion: no more Fujitsu Lifebook laptops for me...

sigadget

Comments on Tablet PC shocker! It was really well made with its magnesium frame and everything. I bought it for my practice to take patient notes on.

http://lloydchiro.com/blog/2010/01/26/using-the-apple-tablet-in-a-chiropractic-office/

But I never used it for note taking while on the go, just while it was docked at my desk. I did like the slate form factor for editing video while reclining on a couch or for playing Railroad Tycoon. The stylus worked extremely well for this. I thought for sure pen input would take off, and would be in most laptops in short time. I still don't know why it isn't more widespread, especially in education. What a boon a tablet PC would be as a student.

If I were to get one again, I would probably get the Lenovo one.

LloydChiro

Comments on Tablet PC shocker!
