For one : you are suggesting Adobe is in some way benefiting from blocking HTML 5 while they are participants in its development platform ( check developers sites for HTML 5 code to see that ) and have no interest in blocking it as they produce webdesign tools ( in fact they produce THE webdesign tool, Dreamweaver ) as their core business.

The fact is HTML 5 is nowhere near being finished and won't be for at least 5 more years . In addition to this, it is a Markup language and by itself has nothing to do with rendering video or apply any other media content. You still need codec or other plugins for it to do that. For Apple the codec of choice is H. 264 ( for video) but this isn't decided by which is best but rather by the fact they have a direct interest in promotong that video standard ( being a licensor for Mpeg-la ) just like Adobe has a direct interest in promoting Flash.

This isn't a battle between "good and bad " , it is a battle between two companies protecting their $$ .The fact Google apparently isn't planning on abandoning Flash any time soon is suggesting Flash does work properly for mobile devices - as we already knew from leaked videos etc. - so we can dispense with the "technological argument " brought forward by Jobs . Google isn't a licensor for H.264 so they don't have to promote it, they can simply pick wichever they deem best ( for the time being at least ) .

rik66

Comments on

@KarlW

I am still waiting for your google evidence. Before we move on to the other updates to our site today, let me address a related topic that’s been in the news a lot recently: HTML5. Plenty of users and members of the press ask about this topic all the time.

When it comes to technology, our only guiding principle is to best serve the needs of all of our key customers: our viewers, our content partners who license programs to us, our advertisers, and each other. We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs. Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.

That’s not to say these features won’t be added to HTML5 in the future (or be easier to implement).
