If smartphone tethering was free, everyone with a laptop card would dump their $60 a month plan and sign up for a $30 a month smartphone plan and just tether.

I could see AT&T maybe dropping the tethering fee to $20 - $15 a month, to "reward" you for having both a voice plan and a data plan with them, since a laptop card does not require a voice plan. Tethering on Verizon is only $25 more I think, so it's $5 cheaper to tether than to have a laptop card with Verizon.

As others have said, get some 3rd party tethering software and just don't overuse it. A good rule of thumb is keep it below 5 GB or they might snoop your data to see if you're tethering to a PC.

bernardino

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

@normanb20

So using PDAnet on Android, does it create a true wifi access point or do you have to connect via ad-hoc?

thanks

logicbomb.de

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

@logicbombde

I was tethering with my Nexus One on AT&T with PDAnet and it was working great. PDAnet isn't a WiFi tethering option, but it is a USB and bluetooth tethering option. I would stick with USB as bluetooth's speed is slow and you don't get good speeds on AT&T's 3G network. The best thing about PDAnet is that you don't have to root your phone. I've tried to install PDAnet on AT&T's Motorola Backflip phone and it won't work. AT&T has crippled that phone enough where it doesn't work.

RJMcKenzie

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

@Mike10010100

The big deal is iPhone on AT&T = Fail up until now. While you and I have been enjoying free tethering for years with MANY older devices, Apple fanboys on AT&T never had a legitimate way. I say on AT&T because While I have Sprint, I also have an iPhone for traveling and I have an English prepaid simcard from 02 last year I got the simcard and it has the tethering option! Yes a Prepaid sim showed that option on my iPhone running 3.1
also while I was in england I had picture mail aswel. On 3.1 firmware. These small facts showed me instantly how crap AT&T really is lol. A yr later they released 3.1.2 for picture mail! Ha I had it already in England with a damn prepaid card! Now further down the line with 4.0 we get the Tethering haha this is why iPhone needs to be on another US carrier. I hope Verizon does end up getting a version and compete with crap AT&T perhaps then AT&T will be more on point with their slack network and crap plans.

Rookie4sho

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

@sommerchan
you can get it for free if you download the sinfuliphonerepo works great!!

Eggie197

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

It looks photoshoped

SskyNnet

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

@SskyNnet it's not, i have beta 4 on my iPhone and its 100% legit

Steven

Comments on iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

@Stevenk
In other news, Hell just froze over.
