my n97 does. Nearly. 32gb + 32gb = 64gb, and it's not strictly an mp3 player, but it does do everything that you're stating. And it is fairly old now. The cheapest N97 goes for 320 euro's over here, while the cheapest iPod touch goes for 160 (yes, I know the 64 GB iPod Touch is a lot more expensive but I was talking about multiple features, not just storage). Also, one might argue that the Ovi store does not compare very well against the Apple App Store, but I'll leave that argument out since I don't want to get into some kind of pro-, and/or anti-App-Store flamebait.

It wasn't an argument, just a comment. I do have an n97, i'm not lying, I don't see how you can argue that I don't. Oh and it does have touchscreen,64gb (32gb+32gb) and is an mp3 player with a camera, and isn't brand spanking new either. Or your saying that it isn't touchscreen, doesn't have mp3... I get and understand your basic point. A nokia n97 is a phone. An ipod touch doesn't have phone capabilities and is most accurately described as a dedicated mp3 player. I'm aware of both what an ipod touch and a nokia n97 is.

However, you suggested that this prototype ipod touch is innovative and one of a kind. You challenged us to name another device with the same capabilities. I did. And if I were more phone savvy i'd probably be able to rattle off several more, certainly by the time this prototype were to come to fruition.

I agree with your general point, that although many of us are quick to deride Apple, they still are ahead of the game, albeit by (arguably) not that much, however in this case I feel that the n97 does stack up against this prototype more than favourably, even when considering the price which despite your initial accusations is fairly likely to be quite narrow given the high price of Apples products and the general trend of mobile pricing falls.

The n97 can be considered standard fare in regards to being a smart phone, it is no longer the best out there (if it ever was), and it certainly will be average or worse within the next few months. i mean, my 2 year old nokia only has a... 5 megapixel camera...
and has better music playing capabilities...
but ill give you the storage capacity, i only have 32Gig
though, if i ever get more than that amount of music i might get an MP3 player instead of my phone :)

Some think innovation means 'higher specs', some think it means 'unique features', and again others think it means 'revolutionary compared to previous iterations of the same product'. It's almost impossible to have a discussion about innovation in a gadget, on a blog like this.

In fact, the only argument I want to make here is against the '... is standard fare on ...' remark before, which seems to imply the iPod touch is just like any other cheap MP3 player on the market, and has no selling points whatsoever that might warrant purchase. I disagree, since there are very few devices that have all the stuff the next iPod touch has. A camera on an MP3 player definitely isn't 'standard fare', an app store on an MP3 player isn't 'standard fare', and 64 GB flash isn't 'standard fare'. All three combined in one device even less so. Of course there are phones that have all this. My iPhone, for example, has everything except 64 GB flash, but then again, it's 4 times more expensive than the cheapest iPod touch. If you want to get an MP3 player that has all this, your options are limited to buying a higher-end smartphone. Even the Zune HD doesn't have a camera or 64 GB memory.

2 MP isn't stellar, and you'd expect at least 3 MP since that's kind of entry-level right now, but it's not really that important either. No-one will expect DSLR quality from his iPod touch. Also, a good 2 MP sensor and lens is *much* better than a poor 5 MP sensor and/or lens. Not saying the camera on this will be fantastic (maybe it is, who knows for sure?), just saying megapixels are like GHz, overdoing it because it's a nice marketing spec doesn't get you better pictures. exactly... i work at t-mobile and my 3GS destroys the myTouch(3MP), the motocliq(5MP) and even the new myTouch Slide(5MP) in taking pictures.. then when we hop on over to video, its even worse.

It's probably good enough to be a video camera though... ie, a Flip Killer. It's especially cool if you can upload videos to Facebook or YouTube over WIFI.

But, you've already got a camera in your cell phone... why have another device with a mediocre camera? Do people carry a separate MP3 player with them all the time?
