Toshiba ships Core i7-equipped Satellite P505 gaming laptop, all 18.4-inches of it
Looking for the most gargantuan laptop money can buy? How's about the biggest laptop that the least amount of money can buy? Toshiba's Satellite P505 -- a machine we spotted briefly at CES this year -- has now been put on sale over at Microsoft's own webstore, complete with an 18.4-inch LCD (1,680 x 945), a 1.6GHz Core i7-720QM processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, 500GB SATA hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, a DVD SuperMulti drive, ExpressCard slot, integrated memory card reader, NVIDIA's GeForce 310M (512MB), four USB 2.0 sockets and a beastly 12-cell Li-ion battery. Best of all, you can pop in a coupon (see the links below for details) in order to score this behemoth for $689, or just $687.95 more than freedom. Hop on past the break if you need an explanation.Update: Seems that code down there has expired -- anyone got an alternate?

I suppose it is time to upgrade from my Apple Newton
@SamTatr
Hah, my bro just got one of these (custom with 330M instead of that crap 310M and 6GB RAM), it's pretty sweet.
I got myself a Qosmio... sweetest lappy ever (GTS 360M)
@SamTatr
I choked on my coffee I'm laughing so hard.
"score this behemoth for $689, or just $687.95 more than freedom"
Well played, Engadget. WELL PLAYED.
@SamTatr Suddenly, I think about the Alienware M11x landing on 900 USD. This could be great, but I still prefer the former. http://j.mp/alienware-m11x-superb
... powerful specs, but gaming? not with that GPU.
@Beastage Agreed. A 310M is worse than what Apple put in their 13-inch macbooks
@Beastage Exactly my thought... how is this being labelled as a "gaming laptop"? NVIDIA's GeForce 310M (512MB).
I'd like to know if there's an upgrade option for that GPU.
@dreamerkm A gaming notebook it is not but a whole lot cheaper with similar specs to a Macbook it is a match
@Beastage Agreed some type of ATI 5xxx series mobile GPU please!
@Beastage At less than $700 price I see no reason to complain. None.
@Beastage
What an awkward bunch of specs. The only thing this notebook has going for itself is the pricing, and that's only if it's the starting price for the base configuration. If there's no further configuration options, then this is one lame duck of a gaming notebook.
@dreamerkm except the 320M in the MBs is integrated. and 256 MB.
the resolution would be too low for me.....
@gboehm Far too low, some 15" Notebooks have a similar resolution to that
@Edmunn Indeed - my old Sony Vaio VGN 17" has 1920x1200
@Edmunn if they would up the resolution to 1080p and put some decent speakers in it i could see that thing in some tenagers rooms as a desktop replacement but for me it would be a nogo haveing a mac mini and a m17x this thing would be a step down in every way
@RincewindWiz yeah but that's a different price point isn't it ? my m17x ( alienware) is 1200p too it's something u don't expect at under 1000$ 1080p would be enough on this one .....
@gboehm You understand you would need better than 20/20 vision to even notice some difference between 720p (the resolution of this laptop) than 1080p, under 40 inches? Since it is 19, I think you will never be able to tell the difference unless you are watching HD sports, which are mostly broadcast in 720p...
@Knightmare that's absolutly correct for tvs or videos at a whole but u sit a lot nearer at a monitor so you see the difference easily
another reason are still images of course in a picture in motion or a broadcast you wouldn't recognize a lot of a difference .
@Knightmare This is a computer, not a TV, you're not going to be sat ten feet away from it... In anything but film it is VERY easy to see the difference in resolution, even with TVs.
still USB 2
I am waiting until USB 3 on laptops before I upgrade
@smeee Nothing even really uses USB 3.0 yet so why would you need it?
This is a gaming laptop?
Just cause it's got an i7 and an 18 inch screen doesn't mean it's a gaming machine.
@poita18
nice spot mr.armchair bandit, care to cure cancer next?
As others have said, just because it has a descrete GPU they think they can call it a gaming machine? It's one of the worst cards you can put in a laptop these days...
Really? Shamelessly plugging a terrible video, that trivializes war and patriotism, with inappropriate lyrics for no reason other than to try to market some viral video? Didn't think this was Engadget's style... You really need to rethink your audience, we come here for tech news, not to be inundated with stupidity.
@ACT5312 Wow, settle down man
@ACT5312
...that's just a clip from a movie. Stupid? Yes. But that's the point.
@SteveyAyo
I'm just so sick of stupid. I guess it's what I get for working in a government bureau; bureaucracy has nothing on stupid people. Videos trying to be the next big viral thing really annoy me.
@ACT5312
You know that vid's from team america, (a movie) which came out like 2004. Its not attempting to be viral its just an excerpt from the movie
@ACT5312 I don't think this is selling anything...
@ACT5312 Uh, sounds like you're the stupid one. What viral video ? Oh, you mean the clip from a 6 year old film ? Get off your high horse, it's a Saturday morning on a Tech Blog, lighten the fuck up.
$689?? Something has to be wrong with it. Maybe they just stuck some left over hardware into 18" shell, and gave it a the i7. Unless this is a typo?
@dizom
haha, the problem is it says "TOSHIBA" right on the box.
@ACT5312 You mean the laptop company with the most reliable machines, even more so than Apple ? Again, stupidity from you.
@dizom The price is actually like $1100 - it's not a crappy laptop. It's a coupon code that drops it that low; the code gives "40% off Select PCs"
@Dreamwriter ...and that code wore off, can no longer be used.
@SarnGate *shivers from memories of wasted money on a toshiba laptop*
Gaming = GeForce 310M ? Fail.
@Khattab
I`m ...... completely lost. What advantage could this enormous "laptop" over a normal desktop set up?
Engadget is on crack. The coupon has been dead for 2 days.
@itaintrite
omg fuck engadget
I just tried the discount code and it didn't work. Slight possibility it's because my shipping address is hawaii
Core i7? That's nothing compared to my Celeron D.
@Professor Hubert J Farnsworth
change your avatar and please appear regularly quoting futurama. that would be great.

that is very cheap - i would have thought it would cost somewhere around $1299 or something like that for that beast!
A quick question, since I'm clueless on stuff like this. Isn't 310M inferior to 320M/330M?
@HikaKao You'd imagine so.
@HikaKao It's also inferior to a gt 230.
