Obviously if HTML 5 is an option, you'll prefer to use that in Android as well. The point is, it's usually not. It's not as if Android has chosen flash instead of HTML 5 -- it's chosen to give you the ability to do both. So how about this test:

Load up a Flash site on an Froyo-upgraded Nexus one, and pick a video to play. Now load up the same site on your iPhone, and stare at the blue and white cube where the video would have been.

Which viewing experience was superior?

Regardless of the battery life you get on one of those options, more options is not a bad thing. With that having been said, by all means, let's test the battery life so that we know how much flash video playback you can do on a full charge vs native video playback. In this case, It wouldn't surprise me if they've gotten it pretty close. It seems like Adobe did a pretty decent job of optimizing things . . .

Faxmonkey

Comments on

@JS

Then put them both together and play an animation/game with HTML5...oh wait..

JT

Comments on

@FragmentedAndroid
You gotta pay the troll toll to get into this boy's hole, you gotta pay the troll toll to get in.

H264

Comments on

@JS I don't recall anyone ever claiming that Flash would outlast HTML5. (This is coming from a person who has used both). Even with Froyo, the UI hasn't changed much, and with iPhons OS 4, the UI changes for the better with a more efficient version of pseudo multitasking (uses less RAM, etc.). so your claims of "multitasking" and "UI" can shift to the pros for the iPhone. That means iPhone has more pros and less cons (making it the better choice). For me, when using both phones, I always go to the iPhone at the end of the day (I started using them on the same day-using Android on N1 about 5 mins. before). Only 10% of poll respondents said they weren't buying an iPad specifically because of its lack of Flash support.

Second, reports of Flash support on Android are mixed. Many reviewers have said the playback stutters on even moderately demanding video content, crashes fairly often, and the handset gets "piping hot" and takes a significant hit to battery life after only half an hour of use. Hmm, sounds familiar... almost as if someone laid out a logical argument against including Flash on the iPhone for precisely those reasons.

Reviewers have been careful to note that the version of Flash running on Android is only in beta, with no support for hardware acceleration. Note that this is as far as Adobe's been able to come with Flash on Android despite 100% access to the platform and 100% co-operation with Google in its implementation after plenty of time to work on it. And once Google's got Flash's big boulder chained to their foot, good luck to them when they try to update Android without having Adobe constantly in their business.

PC World's claim that Android's Flash support gives Android users access to "far more content" than the iPhone is particularly amusing -- many sites (such as Hulu) don't work on Android either, even with Flash support. Other content providers, like ABC and CBS, are either switching their sites to iPad/iPhone-friendly HTML5 or building dedicated viewer apps for the iPhone OS.

Flash is a sinking ship; if your OS's main point of differentiation from iPhone OS has nothing to do with your own tools, then bon chance, mon ami.

MoonWalkerCTE

Comments on

@MoonWalkerCTE

1) Your polling only shows one thing: Users are stupid and believe crap that's spread over the internet, instead of trying to inform themselves and find out about the facts.

2) Those facts are: Flash on mobile devices works far, far better than HTML5.
