Yahoo will be integrated and therefore advertised on all new Nokia smartphones."

You are mischaracterizing or misunderstanding what's happening here. This isn't an advertising deal. This is about support for Yahoo's email experience built into Nokia devices, as well as Yahoo IM becoming the backbone of Ovi Chat, and possibly Ovi Chat being compatible with Yahoo IM accounts.

Most smartphones can already access Yahoo email accounts, but can you support the junk mail features? Trash can? These things can soon be realized with this agreement.

"And Nokia will get what? The web service that is found almost at the bottom of the Yahoo page. And the don't even advertise it with 'powered by Nokia'. It will say 'powered by Ovi' that even fewer Americans ever heard before. How will that strengthen the brand Nokia in the US?"

Besides the access to Yahoo's advanced webmail management features and large user base, a proven and most popular IM protocol as the backbone for Ovi Chat, meaning Ovi Chat could become the standard for IM for desktop and mobile. Nokia just gained the largest chunk of consumers not under the Google or Microsoft service umbrella, and added it to its already massive Nokia/Ovi service umbrella.

And that massive userbase of email users? Many of them are PAID email consumers, with matching landline data connections and TV services, a pleasing demographic to have as an audience. These are paying consumers, not the free Hotmail and Gmail users that come from Microsoft and Google.

Nokia will strengthen its brands the way it did everywhere else. By providing a complete offering of services and devices to fit the most people's needs, and do it better than the competition. The US hasn't been allowed to access those services and devices for the most part thanks to carriers, but that barrier has fallen some, and Nokia will get a chance to make up some ground.

christexaport

Comments on

@Almo
It's odd to me that people here always ask who uses yahoo when they are discussed.
