Samsung demos 19-inch transparent AMOLED display
We don't know what kind of display-making genii Samsung has locked away in its R&D labs, but the Korean giant is once again demonstrating a world's first. This time we're looking at a 19-inch transparent AMOLED display, taking the technology up from the 14-inch model we saw live at CES in January. The company has now achieved a 30 percent transparency on its designs, and its ideas for how they may be used are fittingly futuristic. Samsung envisions storefront advertising, à la your favorite sci-fi movie, as well as HUDs for helmets and car windshields -- maybe if TomTom can secure a supply of these screens, the dedicated GPS device can find a way to live on after all.

That's one well-placed happy face behind that screen.
@kevout
I want these screens so bad! Everything should be these. Windows, Windscreens, Roofs, Glasses, TV, Phones & anything else not mentioned!
@Federaly
i'd love a HUD on my contact lenses!!
...just as long as I don't have to throw them away every couple of weeks - could get expensive!!
@kevout
Samsung's display-making genii loves to workout 10hrs a day besides designing LED screens.
@Federaly This would be perfect for Skype! Camera behind the screen, you could look straight at the person you're talking to.
@wickywills
I'd be happy to have them on my glasses too
@Federaly
This is innovation
@kevout
Yeah!
.........that smiley face!
As we expected, hot Korean girl comments incoming!
@Radukk
I wish the screen were more reflective and her top more transparent.
@Radukk
She's a ghost. I can see through her!
real applications? none
@bizolhao
your kidding...right??
Did you not read the story?
@bizolhao
I still think it would use these in a laptop in front of a pure white e-ink screen. That way when you need the light, you turn the OLED on, but when you want to conserve energy, you switch the e-ink on.
Of course, e-ink needs to improve a little bit, but this IS the future we're talking about.
@bizolhao
hater
@bizolhao Tony Stark's phone?

@bizolhao
First you need to know that you don't need an application to do an innovation, those will come later, a lot of things started as curiosity and found it way to many many applications later.
Second If you just squeeze your head for few seconds , you can come up with number of application , including:
1, Augmented reality in the car wind shield (just imagine big arrow on the road to guide you to your destination).
2. Head-up displays with augmented reality (Think Iron man)
3. Great for Alarm clocks
4. Sign boards and adverts ... etc
5 . interactive tow side board
6. A transparent AMOLED in top of e-ink display, so the display will function as 2 mode display:
AMOLED screen (the e-ink display in the back is complete black) or
an e-ink display (The transparent AMOLED screen in the front turned off)
7. Weather windows! (display weather updates directly your window!)
@Ahmed Alzayani The previous post was direct to @bizolhao and i posted here by mistake.
@Ahmed Alzayani what area of study does this type of technology exist? like what type of engineers are producing these devices and such. I would love to find out more.
There's a ghost in that machine, and it looks pissed!
@Unverified That's a very funny observation. Looks like a muppet from sesame street
"car windshields -- maybe if TomTom can secure a supply of these screens"
And then we can complain it not being bright enough during the day. xD
@ajkun *complain about it -.-'
grammar fail.
@ajkun
"grammar fail."
Grammar fail.

You don't capitalize /facepalm...
@A25i
u all fail for corecting gramma!
=P
@wickywills
hey, leave my gramma out of this.
brararsh and 5 others like this.. :P Facebook style..
@brararsh
*throws sheep*
@wickywills
brararsh has rejected your request.
Is this SUPER TRANSPARENT AMOLED?
@10nisman94
Also known as STAMOLED. Soon to be HD3DSTAMOLED 2000.
(The 2000 bit always makes it sound better)!!!
@bitingback
Likely they'll get too excited and make it the 'HD3DSTAMOLED 2000S19W11019DSSA'
i can watch my "Special Videos" and Smallville at the same-time
No video of this thing at either link = :(
*translucent
@bigcow05
Nah, it's transparent. Translucent means it allows light to pass through but objects on the opposite can't be seen clearly (like frosted glass).
*opposite side
Great. Now I'm going to have advertisements on my Windshield.
what's the point of a transparent screen, may I ask?
@dreamerkm
Think of every HUD setup. Now imagine them, with this.
An entire fighter jet canopy covered in this would be the first application I'd want to try.
@dreamerkm
You may ask; you might also ask what the point is of writing an article on Engadget that people comment on before reading.
@dreamerkm Solar cells behind the screen to charge my phone.

You obviously haven't read Freedom TM by Daniel Suarez. Imagine google googles displayed on this. This is a step in the direction of fictional Augmented Reality.
Also Tony Stark used something like this in Iron Man 2.
What they really need to work out is how to have transparency on a per-pixel basis rather than on the screen as a whole.
_Then_ we're talking sci-fi.
@Richiban
If transparent on a per-pixel basis, are you really seeing a screen? You wont see anything as no image will be reflected back. So why even do that in the first place?
Transparent AMOLED? This could very well be a nice e-Paper alternative.
