Secondly the only times Apple officially used the "xG" notation for naming generations is for the PowerPC Macs, the xG actually reffering to a newer processor being used. Lastly, the iPhone 3GS was a bigger jump than the 3G, the 3G took the same hardware and added a GPS and 3G radio which many smartphones at the time already had, they also swapped out the aluminum casing for plastic which provides better reception, overall though the year between just helped drop the price to the now standard $200, the fact that the newer OSes leave out software features on the first iPhone are simply Apple's decision. The 3GS used a new Cortex A8-based SoC including a new PowerVR SGX GPU, double the RAM, and some minor outer improvements, a movement to another SoC (the Apple A4 presumably) would definitely be a new generation.

JohnTitor

Comments on

@derekdevine I agree and perhaps AT&T should actually focus on making their own network work better.

VictorRaikkonen

Comments on

@derekdevine Oh ATT, many people are crying because of you.. Been trying to point that out in previous threads as well. Nothing is 4G about Sprint's network. Neither CDMA2000 nor WiMAX.

Advertising the current technologies as delivering 4G speeds is also pushing it a bit. In other parts of the world the rollout of HSPA+ has been going on for a long time ago and this what normally is understood as 3G. I think the American market has just been used to low bandwidths and anything faster than what has previously been experienced is just marketed as 4G. If you repeat the message enough times, it will (almost) become the truth.

LTE doesn't even meet the defined IMT-Advanced specifications for 4G, but will be superior to what technologies have been used so far.

But there is a lot more to experienced bandwidth than just the mobile standard in use.
